Eml Light On But No Dtc

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

This is my first post so I feel I should do a quick intro: I'm Dan and I have had a classic modified mini for the past 6 years, recently I took it off the road for a bare shell rebuild and sooo...

I have recently bought an 02 focus and have just changed the cambelt and leaky clutch master cylinder, and now I have a problem with the EML light coming on. I have tried the dashboard trick but it doesn't come up with a DTC code... The engine pulls fine without misfire, although when stationary, it seems a bit hesitant just above 2000 revs... I have ordered a code reader which should hopefully give me an error code from which to work from, but otherwise does anybody have any advice to point me in the right direction.

I also have another problem in which the speedo drops to zero intermittently along with the stereo going slightly quieter and the engine a bit less lively. I have researched that this is the gearbox VSS or the cable rubbing on the gear linkage, but could it be causing the EML to come on?

Thanks for any help,

Dan

I would replace speedo sensor on gearbox beware sometimes the pin that holds it in can be a nightmare to get out

The engine being hesitant above 2k could be the/a midrange flatspot (petrol NA)

the speedo going to zero/ stereo going quieter/ drop in engine power could be a lack of electical power due to lack of output from the alternator/ battery, an electrical fault or an exessive electrical load

the EML being on could be lots of things - wait to you get the code reader -

it is important to say what engine you have (1.6, 1.8, 2.0/ 2.0L ST170, RS 1.8 diesel etc etc) - if its a diesel it will be pre- OBD11 compliant and the code reader may not work and of course, some of these engines are completely different from others, with differentb faults etc

Hi, thanks for your help, it's a 1.6 zetec se petrol with 96k on the clock.

Still no dtc code using the dashboard trick and the code reader I bought hasn't come up with anything either, although i'm sceptical as to how reliable it is.

The unwillingness to rev to between 2-2.5k revs at rest seems to dissapear after the car has been driven for a while.

Regarding your comment about the alternator: when the EML first came on it came up with a dtc code regarding the battery but I stupidly didn't write it down. As the battery has been disconnected a couple of times to do the cambelt etc. When the EML has come on subsequently (usually after approx 150 miles and with nothing common weather/driving) there has been no code and the light stays on permanently.

Cant think of anything else to help diagnose...

Cheers, Dan

The Dashboard only shows some error codes, and not all. You would really need a proper error code reader I expect...
