Revving Problems

Featured Replies

Yes it's me again I have a 2001 1.6 focus lxi....And I seem to be having a lot of problems with it. first I had problems with the central locking, now i'm having a problem with the car revving on it's own.....When I accelerate sometimes the car seems like it wants to accelerate more and when I pull up to lights or at a junction the car revs upto around 2000 revs and sometimes up to almost 3000. it happens every time I sow down or stop and take my foot off the accelerator or the clutch....Any idea's anyone....I'm so close to scrapping the damn thing but I need to know if the car is dangerous as I have two babies.

does it settle back down on its own or stay revved?

going from what you have written, i would say there is either something mechanical sticking...such as the cable or throttle butterfly or if all seems fine then could be the throttle position sensor...

as for dangerous, being a manual then when clutch is engaged your only issue is over revving engine...when it happens, try blipping the throttle see if that brings it down

If its just a blip, could well be as simple as an ICV needs cleaning or replacing.

Hi there, yes it does settle down after a few seconds but as soon as I press the accelerator it does it again.

I would start by cleaning the Idle Control Valve to be honest, it sounds like its playing a part, possibly sticking or clogged causing your issues.
