Jumping Out Of Gear?

Featured Replies

I have a mk7 fiesta a when in reverse it's always jumping out of gear. This also happens with my friends fiesta. How easy is it to get fixed?

Solved by alexp999

Well i don't know much about the new Fiesta as i own a Fiesta mk3 and sometimes it pops out of gear when i reverse and it is a new gear box so i would not worry about it.But please tell me is it only the reverse gear it does it to or do the other gears do the same. And with all cars as i can recall new or old when you do reverse they have a habbit of making a crunching noise does this happen if so it is normal

Perfectly normal on the mk7, it just means you haven't engaged the gear fully.

Mine used to do it and I've seen lots of others with the same issue.

Make sure you are completely stopped when selecting reverse and keep the clutch down for a few seconds to help the gears mesh before selecting too.

You get used to the feel of whether it has gone in properly or not, pumping the clutch usually gets it in if it won't go first time.

Reverse on all B5 and IB5 gearboxes is crap. It won't go in right or pop out. Stop with the clutch down for a second or two before selecting reverse and it should be okay.

Hi you just have to take your time all the Fiesta Gear Boxes are the same (5 speed)I tend to put it into gear after holding down the clutch for a bit try all the above see what works for you.

i find rather than standing still, i leave the car rolling forward a tiny bit and hit reverse works every time, but i always find it jumps out when standing still and it always jumps out infront of a crowd -.- sounding like all the gears came out and will pick them up later lol

I park on a downhill driveway facing a small wall, it's happening to me a few times and is quite scary!

I have never know mine jump out of gear when actually fully engaged, i know if im not in gear as it were because it makes a rattling noise, if it comes out of gear completely i would say there is a problem somewhere, if its not in gear and it throws it out its because the selector comes into contact with the fast moving gear when you bring the clutch up.

My 1.0 Focus does this, if its not engaged properly, (usually from not depressing the clutch enough I think) it makes a horrid 'gears not meshing properly' noise. I did a bit of wee when it first did it.

Did you buy the car from New and/or has it had a new clutch lately? The selector cables might not be set up right, or if it's the tiptronic selector, i.e selection is done by electronics, then the aluminium housing has oxidised inside where the plastic bush sits, causing the selector to jam or not travel as far. Stripping this down and cleaning it can be tricky as the plastic bushes are usually pressed in so extreme care when removing them. Heating the aluminium up so that it expands does help.

If it's neither of these problems, then the reverse gear is either not travelling far enough inside the gearbox, or the reverse gear is damaged

There is no fault here, as has been mentioned by many people, it is normal.

Ford say it is normal.

There is no syncro-mesh on reverse gear, all cars have varying degrees of difficulty selecting reverse, but you get a feel for when it hasn't gone in properly.

If it jumps out then the gear was not all the way in, keep the clutch down a few seconds and make sure the lever goes right back into its position.

If you feel resistance stick it in neutral, lift the clutch and dip it again and you'll normally find it goes straight in.

Or just keep pulling the gearstick into reverse and slightly lift the clutch, and you will feel it drop into gear. I have to do this with my Mk6.

Exactly. if it is not going in, lifting the clutch (in neutral or partially in) spins everything in the gearbox and allows the gears to align.

The other problem, reverse gears are not helical, which adds to the selecting problem (and causes the distinctive reverse noise).
