The Dutchess Won't Start!

Featured Replies

Hi My ford fiesta (07) will not start. When I turn the key, electrics come on and the engine is firing to start but it just doesn't get going.

About a week ago I noticed my doors were open. The 3 button fob key was not looking, but was starting the car.

Over the past week I noticed the start up was taking long until today where it just will not start.

Any ideas?

The car is well serviced, has not leaks, oil is fine and was changed last month, coolant is fine and clean (No oil in it etc)

With Electric will a bump start work? I'm thinking if I can get it going i can get it to a garage.

Petrol or diesel

Petrol. There is plenty in it too.

Pull up back seat an wit help of friend get them turn ignition on see can u hear noise off the fuel pump

  • Author

Ok will do this shortly. Its a 1.25 Petrol by the way.

if the engine cranking either no fuel or spark or possible crank sensor so let me know if fuel pump is running first

  • Author

OK tried it, with the missus turning the key me in the back listening.

I heard a humming noise. the car cranks about 4-6 times and then stops. Then if you try turning the key again it won't crank.

So I waited 10 minutes and it cranked again 4-6 times and then stopped.

It stops or she lets off the key is battery charged ok does it sound like starter motor turning quick enough

  • Author

Yes sounds like it just can't get that final revolution to start. No she is holding the key fully on and doesn't let go.

Are starter motors alot to repair?

Battery is old but is charged and all electrics are on. I suspect the spark plugs its like there is not spark in there. Now i did get them changed at kwik fit about a month or two ago during a major service...

Remove spark plug number 1 disconnect fuel system fuse or injector block connectors put plug in the lead an wit an insulated pliers hold it to one bolts on ur rocker cover get ur assistant to turn it over see are u getting strong spark but I doubt even Kwik fit be that incompetent sound like something else if u turning it over an stops it self could be starter or bad connection somewhere

You mentioned in your descriptive post about your fob was not locking the car.... Maybe it's just the battery in your key has given up the ghost so your immobiliser could be stopping the car from starting.... Try starting it with your spare?

Have you tested the battery or tried to jump start it, mine cranked no problem with a knackered battery, it just doesn't have enough power to sustain both crank and spark, try a jump start and you will have an answer to 1 part of the question.

Thanks for all of the advice. To be checkng spark plugs and fuel lines is a bit beyond my comfort/knowledge zone. I have replaced the battery in the fob key and tried to start it. Same problem. I have also tried the spare key to no avail.

I will try to bump start it today and at a last resort get the local garage to tow it away for repair. I just know thia will be costly.

Out of interest does the engine light go out when the engine cranks?, if the fuel pump primes and pumps then, it must be a spark problem, I'm just wondering if the engine light doesn't go out while cranking if the coil pack has gone completely pear shaped, although I'm not sure if the lights extinguish until the engine is turning under its own steam, does the car shake in any way while cranking or is it just a smooth turning over of the engine?

The engine lights Turn out after several revs. The cranking it smooth and is not vibrating the engine.

Trying to bump start in the next hour or two so ill post again with results.

Sounds like no spark then, do you have AA or RAC cover, they would probably be able to tell you what is wrong at least and perhaps fix it if it's a minor bit of infidelity, good luck.

I wouldn't bother with the bump to be fair if a jump didn't work then I doubt that a bump will with a new battery and all.

No rac etc. So will have to get a garage to tow it. I think my local garage is is literally walking distance so they should be able to help.

If you go there regular or are friends with them I'm sure they would pop around to have a look, at the minute most places will take any work they can get.

I had a similar problem with my previous car, starter was cranking the engine, with no attempt from the engine trying to start. I ended up getting the AA to look at it, the first thing he checked was the key fob battery, when that was eliminated next he went to the crankshaft speed sensor (which it turned out to be) was easy to replace in my old car but not sure if its as easy on the fiesta.

The part was a dealer only part iirc it cost about £50 to buy but fitted myself, so no labour costs added.

My thoughts exactly. They look reputable and service taxis. I have uswd them before for a very minor fix.

Have u checked all the fuses

This has now been solved. At first my local garage thought it was the battery. It was the final segment of the ignition barral that had warn away. As my battery was now 7 years old I thought best and changed that at the same time. The car now start like a dream. The last bit I have lost is the key beibg coded. In this barral failure my fob key has stopped remote locking. The only way I can see to recode it is taking it to a local Benfield ford at a cost of £180...

I think to solve ur key issue im sure iv seen on this you have to put the key in tbe ignition so many times just search google how to program a ford key and it might show you the link better than paying 180 quid like :-D
