Egr Valves - Worth Reading, Then Make Up Your Own Mind.

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I've seen many posts relating to EGR valves, I had an idea about what they do but not enough. So I did some checking and came across this:

There are some other topics in this link. I think this could help a few of you.

Happy reading!

Unfortunately that is an American article / link that applies predominately to petrol - engined NA (naturally asperated or non-turbo) cars, on diesel engined cars the EGR system tends to contaminate the inlet (including the inlet manifold) with carbon that can eventually choke the airflow, with has a disasterous effect on economy and performance, in the short term the exhaust gasses getting into the inlet reduces power (therefore efficiency, and economy)

On a turbo engine, when the EGR valve opens pressure and heat is lost that would otherwise go to the turbo turbine, loosing power slightly (often noticed by drivers as "hesitation" and "flat spots")

This loss of power means more throttle (so more fuel) is required to accelerate at the same rate (wasting more fuel)

Members on the forum that have fitted a solid blanking plate on tjheir turbo-diesel Fords, usually report that this "flat spot" or "hesitation" has dissapeared, and the car performs better, with better throttle response, less lag, and better fuel economy

+ in the long term the inlet no longer gets contaminated and as the EGR valve is effectively disabled so can no longer fail on many systems (more reliable)

The American article/ link may be correct in reference to NA petrol engined cars, but in my experience, does not apply to turbo- diesel cars, it seems based on theories rather than fact or testing EGR systems in operation/ when blanked/ disabled, and the way they have "dumbed down" some of the topics (like why a 5-speed manual is more economical than a 4 - speed auto 'box) seems over- simplistic

Anybody can write anything on the internet, It may only be their THEORIES or OPINIONS, they may have hever worked on a car, or fitted an EGR blanking plate, or they might have fitted it wrong or fitted the wrong kind (eg- one of those useless ones with holes in instead of a solid one)

For the FOC members who have actually fitted solid EGR blanking plates, they know the FACTS about blanking plates, so for them, its more than theories or opinions

Apart from the the odd (rare) isolated incident, almost every FOC member has reported better fuel economy, better performance and less exhaust smoke after fitting a solid EGR blanking plate to their turbo-diesel Fords
