Turbo Issues?

Featured Replies

Guys, my dad's Mondeo has developed a lovely noise! To me, and my tuning friends this is what we aim for! However on the standard Mondeo STTDCi it's not right!

You can hear a lot of turbo chirp through the exhaust on lift off, or gear change.

Do the mondeos have a separate wastegate that could be stuck open? Or would sticky vanes on a VNT cause this?

He is hoping it's not the turbo as that would be expensive!

ST-TDCIs do not have a seperate wastegate - the boost pressure is controlled by the VNT - there are 2 types,- euro3 with pnumatic actuator, and the later euro4 type with the electronic actuator

The noise usually occurs lifting off/ changing gear, and is normally due to a leak in the exhaust just in front of the back- box, where it corrodes, even a tiny pin-hole can make a noise, eventually, it can rust right through and with the weight of the exhaust, the back-box can fall off!

ST-TDCI rear exhausts are no longer available from Ford, (apparently) only the tit-x ones that are hidden/ "turn down" but you could probably fit a tail pipe to these or obtain a rear section from an afrermarket supplier like Puma, etc

Cheers FOCA,

At least it could only be the exhaust! Actuator still works and moves, I've checked that already.

I'll investigate more later!
