Uneven Rear Tyre Wear

Featured Replies

I have noticed that one side of my Mondeo estate is suffering from uneven tyre wear. The outside edge of the tyre has visible blistering but it does not go the whole way around the tyre.

I had the 4 wheel alignment checked at a specialist but all of the settings are within tolerance.

Anyone any ideas what may cause this?

could be just a bad tyre, if the alignment and balance are both good, then it could only otherwise be the suspension, but then again if its aligned whilst with the full car weight on it, I wouldnt expect this to be the case.

Thanks for the reply. Has anyone ever had a 'bad tyre'? I never had in all my years of motoring but it has crossed my mind that it could be a poorly formed tyre (it is a Michelin)

these things are manufactured in their thousands daily, so its always possible that something slipped up on the production line. I previously had this with a bad tyre, I had one on for about 150 miles and it was feathering poorly on the inside and had been fully aligned. The manufacturer replaced it, took it back and checked it over, they then had to issue advisories to all the customers / shops who had bought from this batch, thankfully they only lost about 100 out of the batch which in the grand scheme of things isnt bad, considering their batch was over 5,000

Hi, Same problem , one rear tyre un even wear on my (ghia estate 130K miles). Tyre will only last 10K mls, wear on nearside rear on inboard edge. I am suspecting combination of rear track / and camber along with rear springs weak. Only one side affected so not just the spring. Eccentric bolt on lower link adjusts rear track is rusty and mechanic reluctant to try this saying rear track ok. Replacement bolt needed?Track Seems to be visibly out of kilter with front track when sighted by me. Will have to get spanners out soon. Soggy carpet on drivers side seems to be coming in front bulkhead, not sure which to do first ? M

I took mine to a specialist alignment company (FCM Bristol - highly recommend him, have used him for years) and everything was inline.

I changed the tyres and they are now wearing evenly (about 9 months in now). Perhaps it was just a faulty tyre??

Do you have a sunroof? I had a similar leak (in the front passenger floor well). I scan of the internet suggested that a non-return valve in the drain from the sunroof is prone to blocking and is the usual cause for soggy carpets. I followed some instructions (cannot remember which site) driled out the offending article and it has been fine ever since!!

Oddly, I also had this on a previous car (Cougar, so roughly the same a MkII Mondeo, as far as suspension is concerned); that tyre was also a Michelin.

When I went to the local tyre place, the guy sucked through his teeth and said to his mate 'Michelin...got a Michelin that's gone out of shape' and they exchanged glances. Of course, given that he read what was on the side of the tyre they could have done the same thing with any brand of tyre and it would have sounded just as convincing.

I then did something that I don't usually do, which was swapped the rear tyres, side-to-side. Well, that didn't cure it, but it didn't really get any worse, either. (And, by the way, it went out of shape at about 40k miles and was still on the car (with not that much left) when I sold it at 95k. So, whether I can really complain about that is a matter of question, but I would have liked to get it to 100k, just to be able to claim that milestone.)

Edit

PS: A picture might help.

Many thanks eskay, some useful info re the sunroof drain off, I think I will test this out with a watering can and sunroof open to see if it is draining and where to!. In the meantime I will use the wet VAX to stop the ducks swimming away see if this does the trick. Thanks again M
