Forget Sync Applink

Featured Replies

Just found this info on the following website:

http://motrolix.com/2014/01/ford-to-make-sync-applink-available-to-3-4-million-existing-vehicles/

I think this is a site in the USA but I've also seen the same information on UK websites.

After reading through the article which is dated 4th January 2014, it seems that Ford were going to release it's SYNC AppLink feature to 3.4 million vehicles currently on the road and it states, "some 2010 and 2011-2012 model year vehicles produced by Ford were equipped with SYNC but were not equipped with SYNC AppLink".

As stated in one of my earlier reply's, Ford told me that SYNC 1.1 with AppLink could not be installed on cars like mine because the hardware was not compatible so, I don't believe all this hype about the hardware not being compatible with the SYNC updates.

Also stated is, "owners of vehicles that were previously not compatible with AppLink will be pleasantly surprised by the newfound compatibility, which we imagine will improve customer satisfaction". So it seems to me that no hardware changes are required for, at least, SYNC 1.1 with AppLink.

Hi,

I have also noticed many an article reporting that 2010 cars and younger will be upgraded for free in the US including this one: http://rainnews.com/ford-will-grandfather-2010-cars-and-later-into-sync-applink/.

So after reading several articles I decided to check the Ford US website using the Wayback Machine website in an attempt to work out what version the 2011 US Fiesta had. Their 2011 fiesta sync system does exactly what our 2013 system does but has nav so is a newer sync version. I couldn't get info about the 2010 US fiesta but I'm sure the hardware that is getting the upgrade in the US is pretty similar to our hardware. For those interested in the US 2011 Ford visit: http://web.archive.org/web/20101230165434/http://www.ford.com/cars/fiesta/models/.

To reflect on recent discussions the issues we currently have with Ford are as follows:

Ford of Europe officially launched Ford Sync for the Fiesta in Europe and the UK at the Paris Motor Show in September 2012 (source: http://www.ford.co.uk/experience-ford/MotorShows/ParisMotorshow).

Shortly after this Ford of Britain launched a webpage on their website explaining about Sync and stated that: 'Ford SYNC technology is constantly evolving – for example, its language capabilities are becoming more sophisticated all the time. And you’ll be able to integrate the improvements and new services into your SYNC version, as they’re released'.

This led the visitor / potential buyer to believe that Ford would support their Sync system by means of software updates that would be available by visiting their dealer. This appears to be untrue as several people have been told by dealers, Ford of Britain and Ford of Europe that their hardware will not support software updates or that no updates are available.

Ford of Britain used phrases such as 'advanced SYNC system' and 'new technologies' to describe Sync making the visitor / potential buyer believe that what they were getting was a new up to date piece of technology. This has now been found to be untrue in that whilst it may be new technology for Europe it is in fact several years old in the US.

Our 2013 Ford Fiesta's have been fitted with a piece of hardware called sync module (APIM). The issue is that this supposedly new hardware has been found to be old hardware in the US and many thousands if not millions of Ford (not just Fiesta) owners here in the UK and the rest of Europe have been led to believe that it was new hardware being installed in their new vehicle and were willing to pay a premium for this new hardware on the basis that it was the latest and it would be capable of receiving software updates.

With regards to the issue at hand being discussed on here many owners are finding that after less than a year (or just over a year in my case) Ford have turned their back on us and our hardware despite allowing 2010 and younger vehicles in the US to be upgraded whereas we here in the UK and in Europe are left with new vehicles with out of date hardware.

The issue is if Sync 1.1 was available at the time some of the vehicles were built why were Ford installing Sync 1.0.

In my case I purchased my vehicle with the believe that from statements on Ford of Britain's' website that I would get software updates and in particular AppLink however from reading posts on here it appears that Ford have stopped supporting my hardware and so I am stuck with old hardware which wont get updates despite Ford's promise online.

I will finish with an analogy which may make the issue clearer, many sync owners have paid for what they thought was an iPhone 5S and got an iPhone 3GS and are now being told sorry your phone isn't capable of taking IOS7.

Found this in MS Document: A Technical Companion to Windows Embedded Automotive 7: Proven technology adapted for the automotive industry at: http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/A/1/0A1E07D6-7562-4566-AACF-E04DF4FF8879/A%20Technical%20Companion%20to%20Windows%20Embedded%20Automotive%207%20(final).pdf.

Based on the features It clearly shows that the Sync version in our cars was released in 2008. The only difference being that we have Emergency Assist rather than 911 Assist. But I'm sure that they are just different names for the same feature.

Wow, devastasted. Is this confirmed? We cannot get the update for AppLink?

I notice the last post on this was back in 2014. It looks like Ford have got away with mis-selling - I'm amazed they have got away with it. Several years have gone by and there are still no downloadable updates. I called Ford customer services and went round in circles talking to them. They couldn't even tell me the latest version number for a basic sync system (as fitted to my 13 plate Focus). They avoided answering why the Ford website has said that downloadable updates will be available "soon" for over 3 years! All I got was "contact a Ford dealer" which I have done and got nowhere.

Is there is anyone who has any ideas about lobbying Ford to get some action on this.

no developments in this regard? I'm also stuck with a SYNC 1.0 that can't be upgraded to 1.1, built only a few months before Ford started shipping SYNC 1.1 equipped vehicles in the UK.
