Focus 2008 Mk2 1.8 Duratec He Petrol Poor Mileage

Featured Replies

Did you ever manage to fix this issue as i have the exact same problem with my 1.8 petrol. Thanks

When you fill up, how many litres does it take and how many miles per tank?

Any fault codes?

Any other problems you've noticed that we should be aware of?

I know it sounds random, but do any of the wheels have an exceptional build up of brake dust, more so than another, which could indicate a binding brake?

What is your driving style, city, sitting in traffic, motorway cruising?

@Roo123 you do know that the original post is over 7 years old ?

The OP has not been back to the forum since November 2014, so I'm quite sure he's not going to answer you.

Yep, just noticed that, you're probably right. Can't find out why my mk2 2009 1.8 petrol is over fuelling. I have checked the 02 sensors, sprayed everywhere to check for vacuum leaks, had it serviced, used forscan to check fuel trims, the stf and lft add up to 8 if that, which by industry standards is ok i believe.. If anyone reading this can help, please do. Im getting 13-14 mpg urban.

Hello Ruhul, I'm amazed your engine can actually run if it is truly using that much petrol and only doing 13mpg.

What do the spark plugs look like ? Can you take them out and post a photo ?

The car has had a service. The spark plugs are 4 months old. Even before the service i had this problem. I mostly do city driving. Stop and start, drive miss daisy, so not heavy on the gas. The car itself drives really well. No hesitation, thankfully, picks up speed when i apply the gas. I did have the common instrument cluster fault, that was repaired some time ago. Since then no fault codes. Its a strange one.

I was asking what the spark plugs look like (not that you need them replaced). A lot can be diagnosed from the colour.

Are the deposits on the plugs, Black-dry, Black-wet, Brown, Grey, White. A photo would help get a better understanding of the combustion in the cylinder.

What were the fuel trims individually? (ST and LT)

With lots of idling and stop start city driving that could well be expected.

How many miles are you getting from each tank?

Apologies, i have been busy. Will update this week. King regards

Well I guess the problem wasn't that urgent after all 🤔

I have the same engine and get around 350 miles out of a full tank. Thermostat has probably seen better days though, it’s a 2007 car.

Are you running E5 or the newer E10 fuel.

check your engine is compatible with E10

Assume you’ve checked the air filter

just a few thoughts

Sorry my 1.8 was heavy on fuel

Sorry everyone, issue has now been resolved. Replaced t-map sensor and intake manifold. Its much better now, getting 22-24 mpg urban, for me thats an improvement.
