Burnt My Rear Valance Towing

Featured Replies

Assume this is due to the weight of the caravan and heat from the exhaust tip. Anyone had this before? Looks like I may need to modify the lower valance a bit

Oops lol. Is your nose weight correct Jim?

  • Author

Had the noseweight around 75kg which is max of my towbar. Ill look at getting it down a bit for the return journey. Must admit, it tows really well.

Just realised that my last comment was a stupid one.. The nose weight is going to have no affect on the exhaust given that it's fitted to the body

Perhaps it's just the engine working harder creating more heat?

90 degree elbow may help,

Increased demand for torque at consistent speed would require a constant level of boost from the turbo causing more heat in the exhaust system,

This is also the reason a bigger intercooler provides an increase in torque as the intercooler reduces heat in the turbo by cooling the inlet charge of air,

But adds it to the exhaust system we have all saw fast & furious "Danger to the Manifold"

But not as much biost in your case, just increased heat.

Yep, it was the exhaust flame caused it. There'd be no caravan left after that lol

"Darling could you please fetch the sausages from the fridge, were going to cook breakfast from the boot compartment door"

Consistant boost contributed to increase in exhaust temperature i reckon mate,

The inside of the exhaust should be considerably cleaner anyway lol

Is this something I just accept when towing? We only tow every couple of months anyway. I can trim the burnt bit and plate it with a little aluminium to tidy it

How long was that road?

Well, that's us home and it's no worse. Compared my exhaust to another and it appears someone had cut a piece off mine so it doesn't show. I'll add a chrome tip and see if it helps. And the Mondeo? Superb tow vehicle and that's with a 24' 1400kg caravan
