2005 Mondeo, black Smokes Alot And White Smokes Every So Often

Featured Replies

My 2.0 tdci ghia black smokes, I think too much tbh..and white smokes every so often..and just recently it has started 'skipping?'..the revs go up while I'm in gear when the turbo should kick in but the then the revs drop and turbo does kick in if that makes sense..and the engine is quite loud and rattly in low revs but sounds fine in high revs..anyone have any idea on how to sort all this out or know what's wrong with it?

hi i seem to have the same problem with my 06 mondeo tdci. there is some white smoke when i start the car in the morning and there is a smell of burning. i also have alot of black smoke when im in low revs and when it is building up lots of black smoke comes out until the turbo kicks in. also my revs shoot up on the gauge when i put my foot down and it catches up with its self i am told that is the clutch slipping and i went for a diagnostics and it came back that i needed a turbo boost circuit sensor so i really dont know what all the problems are and what i should do any help would be appreciated

Black smoke is usually associated with not enough air / loss of boost, white smoke associated with water or moisture (there is a small possibility of head gasket failure, very rare on a mk3 diesel) a split in the EGR cooler can cause coolant to drop into the exhaust manifold etc - ether of these thgings mean a drop in coolant level, if the coolant is not dropping, you are not loosing coolant

White smoke can also mean unburnt diesel (depends how it smells- if you can smell diesel in it?)

So head gasket failure is unlikely,(on a mk3) but should be ruled out as a precaution, that leaves boost leaks due to split boost hoses, or loss of turbo pressure due to a Leaky EGR valve

Ist thing 1st, get it serviced! new diesel filter, air filter, and oil change filter (if not done very recently)

the EGR contaminates the inlet manifold with carbon (that builds up) it needs to be taken off and cleaned - this in not officially part of the service but should be

Also, fitting a solid EGR blanking plate will prevent this happening again - it "fixes" leaking/ faulty EGR valves and the engine will pull better, with less hesitation, from low revs (can eliminate flat spots)

Aquiring an OBD code reader or getting the codes read can mean saving a lot of money buying parts you dont need - al,l the above are "service" items or "essential" mods

Apart from boost leaks (in the boost hoses) and faulty or leaking EGR valves, other typical problems are the VNT mech coking up and causing under or overboost (that can trigger limp home mode) and the DMF breaking up, contaminating the clutch, and eventually siezing the starter motor

Dont assume two different cars with the same symptoms have the same problem(s), you may have multiple prblems, too

There are many different types of seemingly similar cars/ engines, one of you may have a Euro3 with pnumatic actuator, the other a Euro4 with Electronic actuator etc etc

thanks for the help i had the egr valve cleaned and just after servicing it. i will check all pipes for leaks and check the coolant.

do u think i should get that turbo boost circuit sensor would that help with the black smoke?

does the revs going up when i put my foot down have to do with the clutch or the turboboost sensor ?

Thanks for the help, and my car has recently gone into limp home mode with the orange coil light flashing, dya reckon it could be the VNT mech coking up?

Possibly - the VNT controls boost via the actuator etc, if the VNT gets coked up it can jam, causing exessive boost, car runs ok untill going uphill or booting it when the ECU detects the overboost and puts the car into limp mode to protect the engine. -

You cannot assume this is what is wrong and you really need to get the codes read/ aquire a code reader to find out

that happened to me and they guys that ran diagnostics said it was turbo boost circuit sensor.

There is little point in cleaning the EGR valve out without taking the inlet manifold off and cleaning it as well as the EGR is only a small part of where the air flows into the engine that gets filled with carbon/ gunge from the EGR

There is a MAP sensor, or a T-MAP sensor, and a MAF sensor, replacing them may not fix anything, they may be accurately measuring what is actually happening

if the clutch is slipping it has nothing to do with sensors - there is no "turboboost" sensor - MAP = Manifold Absolute Pressure (or T-MAP Temperature + MAP ) measures atmospheric pressure when you turn ignition on, then measures boost pressure

that happened to me and they guys that ran diagnostics said it was turbo boost circuit sensor.

You need to be more specific - was it high or low?

Yes, could be the VNT - is it an electronic actuator you have?

Think it is the turbo boost sensor,is it better to change the whole turbo and sensor or just sensor?
