Black Smoke & Injectors Caked In Black

Heya all.

I am not very mechanically minded but asking on behalf of my stepdad.

He has a 03 Fusion 1.4 diesel which bellows out black smoke from the exhaust. Everything is caked in black stuff under the bonnet. He cleaned up the injectors and seals a few days ago with his friend in Wales, drove 300 miles home and it started bellowing out smoke again.

Hes looking at it now and its all black again, mostly around the ones on the left hand side.

If anyone has a clue on what's going on with it that would be helpful.

    Does it have an EGR valve? it sounds like carbon deposits have built up to the point its causing back pressure?
