Mk2 - Changing Top Mounts Without Removing Strut?

Featured Replies

Is it possible to change the top mounts just using spring compressors and not removing the strut?

Thanks in advance

No.

The pin bearings in the top mount are a pig to seat properly.

I have changed a few struts/springs on the mk2 focus, I don't think it would be possible to change the mount without removing the complete assembly as there isn't much room to manoeuvre.

Not sure what you mean by pin bearings Clive, the mk2 uses regular ball bearings - an absolute nightmare if you drop them in a car park as I did once..

Ah bugger, thats a shame.

Any tips on removing the strut?

As a side note, I have just got a full set of bearings and mounts from the Ford dealer for £56 which I think is actually very good value. If somebody finds this in a search in future, do try the dealer for pricing on these. For comparison Eurocarparts wanted £92 for Lemforder ones!!

Yes you are bang on, the dealer sometimes is a better option! I have noticed in the past genuine ford strut bearings/mounts ain't all that expensive..

It's quite straight forward on the mk2, the strut comes out no problem as there is plenty of room. The worst bit it after you remove the pinch bolt you need to open up the gap slightly on the rear of the knuckle to pull the strut out.
