Revving Problem On 05 Petrol Mondeo

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I hope someone can help me. I have a 1.8 05 plated petrol mondeo which is having a problem with revving. In brief, when you drop the clutch to slow/stop, the car briefly revs up...very embarassing at the lights, as people think that I am trying to race them! In addition, it is idling just over 1000 at the mo, rather than just under as normal.

Having done a lot of internet research, there appears to be a load of different possibilities, but I wondered if anyone could provide some guidance. I am not a mechanic, but I am practical, and do the basics of servicing myself. As such, I would like to fix it if I can...thanks in advance for any advice.

Have you checked the accelerator cable isnt loose or stretched? Maybe worth giving the throttle body a mini service i had the same issue with a 3 series and it fixed the problem.

Thanks for this...I have revved it at the throttle itself and it still does it, so not the cable. What did you use to clean yours?

The numerous things I have read say it could be a split air hose somewhere, or possibly a fault with the throttle control sensor or the throttle itself. ..nightmare!

I think the likeliest is anything that allows air to leak into the inlet manifold; inlet manifold leaking, leak in any hose attached to the manifold (eg, to an inlet manifold pressure sensor, if there is one, or to the manifold air flow sensor, or the throttle plate itself not returning properly (the throttle stop screw may be set incorrectly, for example - in theory, there is a hole which is intended to leak some air and that could be leaking too much, but that rarely happens; what can happen, though, is that if the hole clogs and someone compensates by setting the stop screw a bit higher, if the hole unclogs, the screw will now be set wrongly).

One entertaining possibility that you shouldn't overlook is that the carpet (or mat) can get caught behind the accelerator pedal and prevent it from returning fully.

either split aiir hose / pipe or as likely a dirty Mass Air Flow sensor. this can be cleaned with electrical contact cleaner.

Hi all,

Thanks for all of your advice to a newbie...

In the end it was a split in a hose on the engine side of the inlet manifold. £30 to replace the hose... £200 to fit! But at least there is life in the old dog yet!
