Engine Management Light

Featured Replies

I bought a mondeo a few weeks ago and all was fine.2 days later the engine management light came on,i contacted the dealer and he told me to take it to his mechanic. He said it was the EGR valve and he would clean it,so he took a can of EGR cleaner, reved the engine and sprayed the cleaner through a hose that he had disconnected. Smoke came out of the exhaust and he said it was burning oil and i should tell the dealer.I phoned him he phoned the mechanic and he said it was the valve stem seals. He asked me to leave it at the garage and i left it for 3 days. When i went back to get it he said it was ready, the management light was out so i was happy. The next day the light was back on and my friend who has a diagnostic computor said it was the EGR valve.I have also noticed that the engine is burning a lot of oil but you cant see it or smell it from the inside of the car.Has anyone got any suggestions as to what i should do,i have tried phoning the dealer but he now wont answer his phone.I bought the car on the 12th august 14 and it has a 3 month engine warranty. Please can anyone help thank you.

I would say you have two options:

1) take the car back and get your money back - under the sale of goods act, the vehicle is deemed inherently faulty and its the responsibility of the trader to have the issues resolved and the vehicle given to you in good health. If the vehicle is not seen to be this, it is not fit for purpose, and you can request a full refund, returning the vehicle

2) allow the dealer to fix the problem.

In both events, if he is ignoring phone calls, you should send a recorded delivery letter to the trader / dealer, advising of all known issues with the vehicle, all actions taken so far, and any expenses you have incurred. Requesting the appropriate course of action (either a return for refund, or resolution to the issue. You should also provide a requirement for his response by date X (I would say 10 days from the date you recieve confirmation of the letters delivery).

It sounds like he is playing you, and I had that recently with my seller, and I dont like being played, so I have a bit of experience on this of late (thanks to the great advice of one of our members to support me!)

you have up to 6 months protection so you could reject the car on your return if necessary!
