Servicing Ford Mondeo Mk3

Featured Replies

Hello

I was wondering if anyone could possibly advise me on the recommended brands I could use for my car,

Fuel filter

Oil filter

Air filter

Pollen filter.

I am looking to save money doing it my self but don't want to cause possible problems getting to cheap.

Also what brand of brake pads I should get?

Thanks

I've always buy my service kits from ebay, never pay any more than about £30/£40

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=mondeo+service&_from=R40%7CR40%7CR40%7CR40&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1311.R1.TR6.TRC1.A0.H0&_nkw=mondeo+service+kit&_sacat=0

Never had a problem with them and in fact, though your supposed to. I've not done service on car this year, as filters are all fine.

Break pads I use are PAGID, I did use to use BOSCH pads but found these don't last as long.

If it was me, I'd be very concerned about the oil filter, and somewhat less concerned about the other parts. I'd probably get my oil filter from a Ford Dealer, and the rest of the stuff from someone like Euro Car parts, GSF, Carparts4less, etc.

Slightly trickier.

If you wanted performance pads, and you wanted to know what you are getting, I'd go EBC. They aren't a cheap option, though (except for their 'equivalent to standard pads' option (Ultramax?), which might be slightly pointless).

(Ferodo is in a similar category, but more so; expensive, high perf pads that may not be what you want.)

If you just wanted something similar to standard pads, but maybe a hair better, then I'd go for one of the following:

Pagid

Mintex

Brembo

Pagid and Mintex are part of the same group, they may even be the same pads, it is difficult to tell (they don't say anything about the pads, apart from which vehicles they fit and who they are made by. You may find this odd.) Brembo also don't say anything about their pads.

All of those three organisation make excellent pads, but the pads that you get for a standard road application won't be their top-of-the-range pads (actually, their 'top' pads may be exactly what you don't want, because they are more suited for race applications). What they will be is a matter of guesswork, but at least, they know braking. And they are about half the price of EBC's performance pads.

(Edit: Or Ford, of course.)

Thank you ZeEscort and BOF for your response

I have been looking around and Franco service replacement ltd do mintex pads for the front for £25.89 this incl vat. Is this a good price?

That sounds like a good price, the pads themselves won't be a substantial upgrade on the Ford ones, and I haven't heard of Franco Service replacement, but the price sounds OK.

I will get the brake pads from them then

Is mahle a good make of filters? And I been told their oil range is same as shell, or that's what they said in store?

I suppose Mahle filters must be ok, but I've no idea how I'd tell whether a filter was good or not.

I didn't know Mahle did oil; the first thing to do with oil is to check which specs it meets; you want oil to the appropriate Ford spec, and probably since your car was released, the -B spec has been replaced by the -C (you can probably still find the older -B spec, but the -C has a number of improvements and is 'backward compatible').

Anyway, anything that meets the -C spec, ought to be ok. Popular choices are the Ford brand oil, which can often be found on the bay of fleas, if you like that kind of thing, or some Ford dealers sell that quite reasonably, Castrol GTX Magnatec and Mobil 3000 (sometimes on offer at Halfords) or maybe own brands from Halfords, etc. (or, Eurocarparts/carparts4less have their own brand QX oil that is quite cheap; I think in that case they have a semi-synth that meets the older spec and a synth that meets the newer one - I think that there is only a couple of quid difference, so I'd go for the one meeting the newer spec).

Occasionally, almost randomly, Halfords have their own oil in 4 litre packs really quite cheaply, but either that offer isn't on now, or my local has sold out - when they have it, the 4 litre is about half the price of the 5 litre, and it is never the 5 litre that gets the offer, only the 4. I don't know what is behind this, as it seems like a mystery.

(Theoretically, there is a -D spec, which is needed for one engine variant in the transit, but, while I've seen it mentioned on-line for probably the past year, I've never physically seen anything claiming to meet -D)

But, the first thing that you should look for is oil that meets the appropriate specs.

I would be careful about buying cheap pattern fuel filters, as they are known to cause problems, best to stick to genuine Ford or "premium"/ known brands, eg - Bosch

Would you say Mann filters are any good or are Bosch the better sort?

(Theoretically, there is a -D spec, which is needed for one engine variant in the transit, but, while I've seen it mentioned on-line for probably the past year, I've never physically seen anything claiming to meet -D)

Having written that, of course, the following day I see that -D is now available from Asda! (Their own brand oil, in the new, redesigned, packaging, claims to be -C and -D.) Don't know whether this makes it any 'better' for vehicles other than those for which the -C is not allowed (one engine variant of Transit, from what I understand), but that is the first time that I've had a -D oil in my sticky mitts.

I'm a bit surprised that the -D didn't become common more quickly, because at previous change-overs it has taken less time to see the new spec available in ordinary shops (such as Halfords, motor parts suppliers); maybe because it is only one variant for which they are saying -D is compulsory? I would have to presume that the Castrol Professional that is the most common oil for the Ford dealers to use is -C and -D compliant, but that's just a guess (and, if so, why hasn't the GTX Magnatec, which is the most common retail oil meeting this spec gone -D?)

That said, my local Asda only had it in 2 litre packages, although they did have some of the others (something like VW, MB, Merc and GM) in new 5 litre packages; whether this is common to many Asdas, or whether it is just that particular one, I can't tell.

Anyway, the whole -C/-D business seems a bit obscure to me, but, if you stick to 'at least a -C oil' you should be ok. (For example, -B oil, if that is what is recommended by your owner handbook, ought to be ok, but most oil suppliers now make their 'better' oils available as -C, so, if you get an oil that is -B marked only, and not -C, backward compatible with -B, you'll know that you aren't getting their 'better' oil.)

That makes sense, so if I go direct to ford or Halfords and give them my reg they will offer me the correct oils for my car, but knowing the about the specifications now I will enquire about yhis as well.

I have order my parts, original filters and oil, found Henry on line which done them cheaper than most places.

Thank you for everyone advice on helping me choose the parts I needed.

When I come to do my pads on my car, some people say not to use copper grease, if can't use that what should I use?

I don't have a problem with high temperature copper grease, provided it is not used in excessive quantities, and it is specialist grease for the purpose. There is a ceramic grease that you can use instead, and it is probably better, but can't really remember anywhere you can get the right stuff from in this country (I've seen it advertised somewhere, but can't remember where).

  • using excess, of whatever material, is likely to be problematic
  • it has to say that it is for brake usage; there are also, for example, ceramic (non-brake) products that are unsuitable
  • you have to be very careful not to touch braking surfaces with oily fingers, never mind getting globs of grease on them

Some people do say that you can't use 'grease' but I'm never very clear whether they really mean the proper stuff, or just ordinary high temp grease and what they say goes wrong if you use it.
