K&n Filter & Breakdown Cover

Featured Replies

I thought about getting a K&N Filter for the car (bing cheaper in long run) rang up insurers (Tesco) only to be told that it would invalidate my insurance if I went ahead with the upgrade. bummer!!

On another note has anyone had break down cover from RAC are they any good reliable? I was quoted the following prices on a pro rota basis

basic road side £19.39
basic with cover at home £45.57

all the above plus onward travel £52.47

still to price up other companies

As usual it shows that insurance companies haven't got a clue about anything, any performance gain from the filter is negligible.

I've had cover by the AA and RAC, they are very similar but felt the service was better with the RAC.

Have you had a service done by a ford dealer? As that comes with a years cover.

no not had a service yet (i presume it had one before i got the car, got it through ford online had to go to Dagenham ford to test drive).

Would it be a year since I have owned the car car or when the previous owner registered it (they registered the car march '13)?

I had a letter telling me they would contact me when its due for a service (my service book is empty)

With this being my first car still getting used to it all. no looking at breakdown cover "yay exciting"

When did you buy the car, it would have had breakdown cover for the first year, then should have been serviced march '14 unless it did 12500 miles before then.

Then it needs servicing.

K&N filters may not be cheaper in the long run, for example, you can buy a pattern stock filter for a mk3 Mondeo for £5 (often its £4) a K&N costs £30, 6 times as much, if you replace the pattern filter every 12 months, thats 6 years,(if you keep the car that long, you would need to to "break even" on the K&N) the pattern filter does not need to be cleaned, so does not need the special cleaning fluid, or the special oil (extra expense)

On top of that, the stock pattern filter will not let the smaller particles through that the K&N does, to wear the engine (bores etc) and it will not contaminate the MAF sensor with oil from tje K&N (if its over-oiled)

think will stick with stock filter then

For breakdown cover, my Dad has been with Start Rescue for the last couple of years - they act as an intermediary between you and local recovery firms

Even with him having 3 callouts, his renewal was still the same price as his initial premium... £36 for home start, nationwide recovery, onward travel/relay and emergency accommodation if required. They're also pretty quick to respond. I added my car to the policy for a further £33. That's car- specific cover and not personal. But it doesn't matter - everyone I'm likely to drive with has breakdown cover anyway.

had an st1 on a 13 plate. changed the filter to a K&N filter & forgot to change it back for it`s first service. ford did the service & the box was ticked to say filter had been changed. K&N filter had not been changed & nothing was said. I now have an st3 64 plate & have put the K&N filter on it.

You would have to do something seriously wrong for an insurance company to check the filter

Having done work experience in a merc garage for a week I can say that they rarely do anything other than change the oil, fill up some water and check tire pressure. They did not change the filters or even look at them. as for k&n, I put one in mine because the old filter was ripped apart- never been changed in its 5 years by the look of it, and the k&n was on discount.
