hi all

I wanted a spare key, so I bought another one, just not sure how to program it

I have the master key (3 button flip key) and a normal key (no remote)

I just bought a new 3 button key with remote, I just need to program it, so I can keep as a spare

ive read the manual and looked online, so I am a little confused if I can do this myself (I want an exact copy of the first one)

You need an Auto Locksmith to code the keys transponder to the cars immobiliser.

A good locksmith can cut & code a key in 10 minutes.

I'd ring a few for a quote.

Do not ask Ford as they refuse to do self-sourced keys and charge an arm and leg to do a key themselves.

cheers stoney

I was hoping I can just do the reprogram method as I have the master key?

You used to be able to on older Fords (I believe up to 2004) however not any more.

Now the keys need coding with an IDS interface.

Hmm

not having much luck with this

tried 3 places, 1 doesent do programming (on there website it says it does)

another company, wont touch my flip key as they don't know what metal is used , so don't want to damage there machine, so they are charging £40 for the flip key + another £75 for the programming , and that's not including VAT !

The other company will cut and program my key for around £90 !

so expensive !

anyone had one done? or is there anybody on here that can do it for less?

let me know

Thanks

That price is really not that bad,I paid my local ford dealer ( or is that stealer ) £175 + vat last year for key and programing , Mike

I don't really need a 3rd key, I was only getting one done as a spare, incase this one packed up or if my mums needs to move the car if im away etc

£90 is pretty average.

Some cutters do get funny about the keys but it's only a chrome skin over a bronze base and cuts just fine.

  • 2 weeks later...

I think someone it telling porkeys (not you stoney)

last week, I popped into my close little town, and went into a key cutting place that do car keys too

I told them I bought another remote that im 99% sure its Genuine, and could they copy from my fob to this one and cut the key, they said it should work, £25 all in

so I went I there today to get it done and it was a different guy, so I explained it again, and he said "cant be done", so I said the other guy said he can do it, he then said he will say the same thing as I did

so I went round to Ford and asked them directly on how to obtain another, and he said that the ONLY way is to send my key of and they copy it and send it back, if you loose it, you can not get a replacement

Your Ford dealer is talking bullshit. There is no need to send the key away for copying. If you have the key number you can order a key from Ford which is already cut to your key number. If you do not have the key number but still have at least 1 key it is also possible to order a cut key. Every Ford dealer should be able to read the key number from the original key you have.

All newer Ford models do not have a master key anymore (the last one I remember with a (red) master key was the Ford Escort). All keys are basically the same. On the focus MK1/MK1.5 there was the possibility to program new keys yourself. To do this you needed at least 2 already programmed keys. On the Focus MK2/MK2.5 this is not possible. On the Focus MK2/MK2.5 Ford increased the protection of the PATS system and removed the possibility to program keys yourself.

On the CODED PATS system of the Focus MK2/MK2.5 the keys must be programmed using a suitable Ford specific diagnostic system which has the ability to program the Ford PATS system. The PATS system requires at least 2 programmed keys.

In my opinion most Ford dealers and locksmiths ask rediculous prices for key programming. I own the equipment myself to program the Ford PATS system. Programming a new key on a Focus MK2/MK2.5 is basically just a 5 minute job.

It is true that most Ford dealers and locksmiths do not want to cut a key which they did not supply. There are a lot of cheap Chinese keyblades which are very hard. Cutting these keyblades can damage the milling cutter of the key cutting machine. Some do cut the key but on the customers risk. If something goes wrong and the (expensive) milling cutter becomes damaged you have to pay for it.

Thanks for the info

no point me calling the AA, all I want is a spare fob identical to the fob I have, just in case I either loose the key or it gets damaged, or if im away from home and my mum needs to move the car etc.

Surely there is somewhere in the UK I can get this done for £50 or less?

If you were in Devon I could have put you on to the guy I use.

He even does keys for Ford with no dramas or stupid prices.

It's the dealers that charge customers inflated amounts.

you would still need to do that?

I am still a bit confused then, I thought you just "copy" my remote, to a new one, and that is it

On the Focus 2005 onwards, ALL new keys need to be programmed in by diagnostics. The facility to add your own keys is not available like it was on the earlier (mk1) Focus. (I'm a working Autolocksmith and run my own Focus 2006 as my private car)

Something like an IDS module or a laptop based programme is required.

It takes about 2 minutes via the car's OBD port.
