Mondeo 08 Ignition Issues

Hi, I have an 08 mondeo estate. For a couple of weeks I have been having intermittent problems with the ignition. The key will turn to point one and two in the barrel but sometimes ( is getting more serious) it won't turn to point three to crank. I think it may be the ignition switch? Can I replace this without changing key? Thanks in advance :)

    My brother has this issue too, I will be interested to know what is failing. His has had the problem for quite a while now.
