5W20 Oil Question

Featured Replies

Could I use 5w20 oil in a 2006 1.6 Ti-VCT focus?

The Americans have been using it for years in their 2.0L focus and now ford here use it for their 1.0 ecoboost but I have been told by ford it can also be used in the 1.6 ecoboost (same sigma engine isn't it as back in the 2006 1.6 ??)

Am I (or ford) totally wrong here? Any thoughts?

Cheers.

The proper oil is 5w30 fully synthetic and only this is recommended the 1.0 ecoboost is not the same engine its part based on the sigma but is a totally different engine.the 2006 is a duratec not an ecoboost again whilst the ecoboost uses the same ti vct system as the 2006 car the engine design and tolerances are different as are the oils recommended the ti vct uses oil to specification WSS M2C 913 C the ecoboost to WSS M2C 948 B also the us engine actually uses 5w30 semi synthetic some u.s ti vct use 5w20 again these are not the same engines in that they use different grades of fuel with different octane ratings and are tweeked for a different market use only whats specified ti vct engines require specific oil

The 1.6 ecoboost is a turbo charged engine the 1.0 ecoboost uses an iron block and the timing belt is bathed in the engine oil they may use an updated ti vct system but they are not yhe same engines

For the 1.6 TI-VCT Ford prescribes a 5W30 engine oil which meets or exceeds the WSS-M2C913-C specification. If this engine oil is not available a 5W20 engine oil which meets or exceeds the WSS-M2C948-B specification can be used as an alternative. However this should not be first choice.

Below the latest official oil specifications which are prescribed by Ford. This information is listed in released in a TSB in 2013.

As listed the 1.0 ECOboost is basically the only Ford engine which needs the 5W20 engine oil.
