What Engine? Advice

Featured Replies

Howdy Mondeo owners

Currently a focus owner but I need something bigger and funds allowing I'll treat myself to a new motor in December.

Most probably a mk4 Mondeo. Will most likely have to me a titanium x.

The question is what engine. Currently I have a 1.6 petrol and I do a lot of miles in it.

Next car will have to be a diesel and a bit bigger. Thinking at least a 1.8 but maybe a 2.0 or 2.2 depending on what there insurance will be.

Fuel economy is a must as I can drive for hours and hours at a time. Preferably no dreaded dpf.

I'm looking for advice on what would be the best engine to go for economy wise and maintenance wise.

Comments muchly appreciated

I think all diesels now will have a dpf.

For economy the 1.8 is probably the best but it is by no means a rocket. The mondeo is a heavy car.

I have a 2006 mondeo 2.2, on a long motorway run I can get around 55mpg, I did once get very close to 60mpg driving 330 miles to Liverpool. Otherwise my weekly average is around 45mpg, mostly dual carriageway and B roads. Plenty of grunt with the 2.2 aswell so I imagine the newer 2.2 will be even better.

The 140 bhp 2 litre is a decent match to the car, and they are quite common; not really the most exciting vehicle on the road, but does the job comfortably.

Personally, I'd only really be happy with the 1.8 if I was going to remap it to get somewhere around the 140 bhp level of power, but ymmv. (Note that, for example, it is easier to find reasonably priced 1.8 Titaniums and Titanium Xs, than the same with the bigger engines, presumably because they aren't as desirable, so, if you are happy with tweaking the engine to get a little more power, this might be a route forward; probably though, you are more likely to get a satisfactory percentage of your money back on an unmolested 2 litre than a tweaked 1.8, if that's a factor).

The 2.2 litre is nicer still; there is a small loss of fuel economy over the contemporaneous 2 litre, but it is more noticeable in 'around town' driving than the motorway/dual carriageway driving that it sounds like you mostly do.

Fuel economy is going to be decent compared to a petrol; that said, the petrol will have been at its worst around town, so that's where you'll see the biggest improvements.

The stated fuel economy improves at around the time of the facelift; I'm not sure the the practical fuel economy improves as much as the stated figures suggest, but it is the stated figures (CO2) that determine the tax...

would most probably go for the 2.0

wouldnt mind the 1.8 but yes i'd have to remap it

would love to go for the 2.2 but i dont think my current insurer would allow it. i once asked them to quote me on a focus st and they said to be able to quote me they'd of needed me to have driven a car of 150hp for a year. the 2.2 is a 175hp so im assuming the same rule will apply in that they'd of wanted me to have already owned something of 150hp or above for a year.

so the 140hp 2.0 may be the way to go

can any titanium x owners tell me anything about the spec? what little features does it have? does it have submarine lighting for example? i'm assuming they all have eletric windoows, auto wipers n headlights?
