Glow Plug Indicator

Featured Replies

Hi all I have just been told by my local Ford dealer that my car does not show the glow plug symbol on the dash when the ignition is turned on but will still indicate a problem if it occurs. My car instruction manual says different which is right? My Mondeo is a September 2010 2l 140 Bhp with the EU 5 engine. Pick it up tomorrow so any advanced advice appreciated.

AFAIK, all the diesel Mondeos should go through the 'dash light test sequence'; that is, in the first ignition switch on position, the dashboard lights all ought to be tested, and anything else is a fault.

Then, in the next position the glow plug light should only come on if either:

  • there is a fault (and that fault might be wider than just the glow plug circuit itself, as it is used as more of a general 'engine fault light')
  • the glow plugs are in operation, which only occurs if the temperature conditions demand it

Hi BOF. spoke to the Ford Service Agent again and was told that as my mondeo has a higher pressure common rail fuel system and as such this system preheats the fuel hence the car does not have glow plugs. The car is a 9/2010 2L 140 TDCI with a euro 5 engine. Searching the Internet I can find no reference to this so if anybody has the same spec car I would love to hear from them if they have the same condition.

Thanks for the reply BOF.

Thanks Ian for the reply. I managed to get to try another mondeo of the same spec at a different dealer and what I was told was correct and there is no glow plug lamp when the ignition key is turned to the Pre start position. So alls good

Thanks all.

Hi Desbe,

Well, I can confrim that my 2104 163tdci definitely DOES have glowplugs!. This morning it was about freezing, there was a delay between pressing the START button and the engine start. In addition a glow plug warning was on ( for about 2-3 secs ) in the bottom left corner of the Convers display ( about where the gear change indicator appears ). So it's as I expected orginally, if it's cold enough the start will delay until the glow plug warmup is complete.
