Droning From Engine At 1800Rpm Or More...

Hi all,

Got the car booked in with local Ford dealer next week to have a strange droning noise coming from the engine when it reaches 1800rpm. This usually carries on until about 3000rpm at which point the engine is too noisy and drowns the noise out. This noise can occur even when the car is standing still so hopefully not gearbox related.

Engine is a DV6 1.6TDCi with about 57,000 miles on it. I'm just wondering if there's a sort of common failure that causes this noise? The drone isn't deafening but to me it sounds like there's intake pressure escaping from somewhere.



I have no idea if this will help but I have the same engine and I had what I would describe as a whirring noise at around the same revs but I noticed mine disappeared when I turned the air con off.

I took it to my ford dealership as it was service time and they rang to say the air con was due a service.

I told them to go ahead. When I got the car back they didn't charge me which I thought was strange but the whirring has gone. So I'm happy

As I say dunno if it's the same or not but you never know.

Thought I'd add to this...

Not sure if it's related or not but WOT appears to occur at around 35% throttle pedal position. If I put my foot to the floor then the car's acceleration is worse than when the pedal is depressed by 35%. You'd think that foot to the floor would mean the best acceleration, but no I get the best acceleration when the pedal is barely depressed.

Scenario: Put foot to the floor car accelerates OK-ish, but as I bring the pedal back up to effectively slow the rate of acceleration the car actually accelerates faster and I get more power. Odd. Also the engine is very sensitive to the slightest press of the accelerator, and will rock when the pedal returns to 0 position no matter how gentle you are with the pedal.

The noise occurs with and without the air con being switched on so I don't think it's due to low gas.

have you checked all the rubber pipes under the bonnet as it sounds like one could be split.

I have had a look under the bonnet for split pipes, but I can't see and reach all the way down to the intercooler. I do have a funny feeling that it is some sort split somewhere in the forced induction circuit, because I do hear air escaping from somewhere.

Turbo also appears to be a little louder than normal but I'll ask them to check its condition on Wednesday.

Shall update this thread after diagnosis on Wednesday.
