Y Reg Ford Focus Issue - Broken Turbo?

Featured Replies

I don't even think my car has a turbo but the issue is similar to if I did have one and it was broken.

I have a Y reg Ford Focus 1.8 petrol.

Usually I put my foot down and it shoots off.

Recently I've noticed, if I put my foot down, the Revs go really high, like red lined, and the car speeds up slowly.

It's almost like the revs aren't catching the engine properly. Before the revs would go up a bit but the car would speed up really fast.

Anyone know what could cause this?

Thanks

sounds like clutch.

I looked it up online and fuel injection line was mentioned. would explain the loss of power.

Surprised you think it could be clutch. I didn't think that could effect the acceleration power

"the Revs go really high, like red lined, and the car speeds up slowly" sounds to me like the clutch slipping, you don't have a loss of power by the sounds you have a loss of drive.

Agree with Adam sounds like the clutch is slipping big time

I agree with the guys who have said slipping clutch. Quite a straight forward job on the focus so will probably cost £250-£300.

The larger end of the scale if they change gearbox oil and seals.

£250-300 is a lot for me

Car cost £1300 about 18 months ago. Is it worth me seeking out a clutch online and getting my local garage to use that one?

Many garages won't touch parts you supply them for 2 reasons, one being warranty and the other being mark up on supplying parts.

The 3 main parts of the clutch will set you back around £130 for LuK.

Just done my lads clutch on his 1.8 that was an luk and cost him less than a ton you should get an Indy to do it with supplied parts as they will make enough on the labour about a four hour job maybe less at a clutch an gearbox specialist .

Thanks guys.

I see LuK is a good brand and found them on http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/buy/FORD/FOCUS/1.8/2000/__/34/transmission/luk-clutch-kits/luk-clutch-kits/

However there are different options for my car - depending on engine code. Not sure what mine is.

Also, is it worth paying £130 instead of say £60-70?

Yes the only difference in price will be less overheads just cos its dearer doesn't make it better if it's made by luk it's made by luk regardless of price just get the correct one.

Thanks - but how do I know what the correct one is? I'm not sure of my engine code...

Also, I'm unable to get to the mechanics for at least a few days. sorry for the stupid question but is it ok to drive... I guess there is a risk that it will just break down as the clutch will entirely break?

Or would the performance just get worse and worse?

Thanks

Engine code is possible on your log book or a sticker on the side of the engine most good motor factors will supplier the correct item off your reg number try putting your reg into euro car parts to obtain the part number required .as for driving depends on where your going ie distance if your only local me personally yer I'd drive it distance no chance my lad drove his for a few weeks with it slipping till we got around to replacing it two weeks ago .

Thanks steads

I put my reg in to a website and there were different options depending on engine code.

I will probably go to garage - just to confirm it is clutch and see if they will use a part I will supply.

I live 15 miles from work. So it's there and back. It's been fine so far. Its just until I can get to the mechanic

About the same distance my lad was travelling to and from just took it easy didn't race the motor and it was fine till we did it .

UPDATE

Just called the garage who confirmed it does sound like the clutch slipping. I asked for a rough figure.

They state that as it's a 2001 Ford Focus, it will need a new Clutch, Central Unit and Gearbox... I think they said something like that.

They have quoted a ball park figure of £450 + vat.

A lot more than I expected and the car was bought for £1300 about 18 months ago, so would be worth only maybe £1000 now.

Time to phone another garage then. A clutch on a mk1 focus should be no more than 300 notes with all the relative bits changed.

Called Kwik Fit but they don't do them.

Called Mr Clutch and they quoted £300 all in. So not too bad.

Just need to decide:

- is it worth it... The car is 13 years old

- drinks petrol for fun

- costs £220 a year in tax

But I do like it ...

I did one on my mates 1.6 just a few months back.

His car had just shy of 200k miles on the clock - not bad for a 1.6 petrol. If the car is reliable enough and your happy with it then 300 quid is probably better than loosing out trying to get rid of and get another.

Yeah mine popped with no warning it was in bits when the gearbox was removed again clutch slip which will effect performance drastically you need a clutch kit slave cylinder and clutch i use fords £350 parts and labour glad i did as the slave cylinder went 1 week later ford replaced it all again free

Check reviews on mr clutch first seen some bad jobs from these types of companies including used parts if you have a ford rapid fit try them dealers arent always more expensive mr clutch has bad reviews

http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews95849.html

Get it done right or itll cost you more wouldnt touch mr clutch with a barge pole

Good job kwik flit don't do them you'd of come away with a new exhaust and four new shocks you didn't require .

I'm going to go to Mr Clutch today.

They seemed ok on the phone. It was the Slough branch.

Yes I did look at those reviews. But I'm sick to death of trying to find a garage. Not all reviews are bad. Will hope they do a good job
