Garage Nightmare

Featured Replies

I took my Mondeo in to a new local garage to get the "knocking" o/s drive shaft replaced. Dropped it off, got a phone call 20 minutes later to say the outer joint needed replacing and it would be £80 parts and labour.

Got a call about 2 hours later, cars done. I picked the car up and drove about 3/4 mile down the road then lost all transmission. Engine running and an awful grinding noise. Managed to pull up in a bus stop, checked under the car and was expecting something to be hanging loose and I could see the drive shaft spinning (and grinding) in the new outer joint. Phoned garage they came and towed me back, said that the grove the clip sits in was worn. I argued that I asked for a new driveshaft so they fitted one. Picked car up same day. (Charged an extra £40) Running smooth, no knocking. Following day (Saturday) found a pool of oil under the car and traced it back to the driveshaft/gearbox. It was dripping out of what looks like a seal as the shaft goes into the box. I cleaned it up as best I could and Phoned the garage and told them what was wrong and they asked me to bring it round, they put it up on the ramp and ran it up. No leaks. They said there was nothing wrong. So I drove it home and left it outside my house with the o/s of the car on the negative camber of the road. This morning oil puddle again. I know something was disturbed/damaged by the garage as there was no leak before hand, so surely they have to honour a repair?

If the driveshaft seal has let a whole lot of oil out of the gearbox it's possible that the level has dropped below the seal so when the car is level it won't leak any more.

You could take the car back, get them to top up the gearbox oil and then they should see just how much oil has been lost. Wasn't there a tell-tale with the side or bottom of the gearbox covered in oil? They should honour the repair as the seal was fine till they started yanking driveshafts in and out.

Yes there was, bottom of the seal was wet, bottom of gearbox and a pool about 3 foot wide.

I cleaned it up best I could and could still see the oil seeping out from the seal/shaft.
