Hi guys and girls.. I bought a 2005 Mondeo tdci last week 5 days later I go out to the car turn the Key and it won't start... Sounds like no compression.. No knocks no bangs just turns over and over.. Had it plugged in its coming up with crank postion sensor fault and pms fault what do I do now? Cheers in advance from Russell

Replace the Crank Sensor or try cleaning it the end of the sensor should be magnetic if the magnetism has gone the sensor will need replacing. If I recall correctly the gearbox has to be slid backwards to allow access to the sensor so replacement is the preferred option, I did this on a transit duratorq the other day but must be honest and say I can't recall if the sensor is outside or inside the gearbox housing on a mondeo. Sure some here will know without research.

Pms I have found is a pain in the butt. Try sorting crank sensor start the engine run it for a short while then plug in and clear all fault codes. It might stay clear but if PMS fault re appears then sometimes replacing filters etc and a good run clears it as the engine is running clean.

My mechanic friend seams to think the timing chain has slipped which is what has caused it to sound like no compression... :/

So, it turns over fast, but no sign of firing? Which engine?

The situation with which engines have timing belts, which have chains and which have both is a bit complex, and I'm no expert. But let's hope that your mechanic knows...at least with a belt, you can have a look without taking the engine to pieces (although they do need earlier replacement).

The sensors do go (essentially, if the cam and crank sensor disagree about whether the engine is rotating, there is a problem, although they do usually still run, but with a warning light); while replacing the sensor sounds like a nice, easy fix, if there is magnetic swarf on the end of the sensor, that's usually an early sign that the clutch/dmf is disintegrating, and you only need to clean the sensor to get it going, but there is an expensive dmf fix on the way up.

The clutch and dual mass were replaced less that 2 months ago.. Is there an easy way to check timing atall?
