Engine Warning Light On

Featured Replies

Hi,can anybody help,I have a 2004 1998cc petrol/lpg Mondeo Ghia. The Engine warning light came on today but the car is running fine,I have a LPG conversion which was fitted in 2004 but have rarely used it for quite a while,

Today I was getting really low on petrol so I decided to switch over to LPG the car ran fine while on LPG, however I then noticed that the Engine warning light had come on,it has been on ever since yet runs equal well on PETROL or LPG

Any Ideas?

Also can anyone tell me if the Fault code readers are any good.

Thanks Steve.

I think you need to check the codes, but I suspect its fuel related. When was the filter last changed for a start?

Hi.Thanks for your response, had a bit of good luck today.bumped into a old friend of mine who has his own garage,so we took my car over there and he plugged it into the computer and it showed the fault,You were quite right about the fuel, what had happened was yesterday I switched my car on to LPG cos I was really low on Petrol, then when I filled up I switched back to Petrol ,my mate said the ecu had then received conflicting messages and tried to adjust, not sure why, could be because I rarely run it on LPG nowadays due to low mileage ( 2004 car just turned 50.000) had car from new so I know its legit, anyway seems fine now.

thanks for your reply.do you think the code readers availiable on Ebay are any good? my mate seems to think you could do a lot of harm to the ecu if you use it without a good deal of knowledge or is he just thinking about is business

Regards,

Steve :)

Hi Steve, no he is right if you at around with no precautions or thoughts you can screw things up. I would highly recommend a modified elm cable 500,000 speed (readily available for less than £13) and forscan (free software, read only) and this allows you to read errors, check data from sensors and does no harm. I have written a guide linked on my signature so you can see the basics of forscan.

If you wanted to be brave you can move onto elmconfig and modify the car , but that's when you risk issues.

If you however just want to try and read the codes yourself and see if you can fix it, then forscan and modified elm is the best way to go, you get the maximum benefit for little price and no real risk (its less than 1 percent chance that reading an error code will do anything to damage your car) but then it's the same with any dealer tool, they all have that tiny element of risk.

All I can say is DO IT :-D I would insist that two things any car requires, is a dashcam and a diagnostic cable and the above combination for a Ford is the best.

Anyway browse my signature, look at 'got an error on your car' and the 'forscan for diagnostics ' links in my signature and it should hopefully make you feel a tad more comfortable

Thanks, thats great info, for the moment I think I will leave well alone until I have read a bit more about them, and my mate sorted me out for £10.Once again thanks for the help.

No worries fella well as I say reading error codes is rarely anything but safe so if you want more information feel free to ask, I have used my setup now on 6 different ford's with pure success
