Thermostat Housing Leaking

Featured Replies

Hi,

After having a leaking thermostat housing I purchased a new thermostat housing, thermostat, outlet pipe which I've fitted...however it's now leaking from the between the outlet pipe and the thermostat housing (new gasket around the thermostat also).

The parts that have been replaced are identical with gaskets embedded in them...it makes me wonder if there should be an extra gasket between the outlet / thermostat housing or if I'm best off making a paper gasket to go between?

Anyone one else had problems with this?

The car is a 1.8tdci mk4 Mondeo 2008

Its possible the gasket has been nicked during installation, drain and disassemble and you should be able to clarify if there is any damage.

Do you mean the gasket which sits around the thermostat? The other gaskets looked to be embedded into the housing / outlet pipe and couldn't be removed, or should there be another gasket which sits between the housing / outlet pipe?

Yeah the one in the housing, could be the leak alternatively you may want to clarify the leak I'd actually coming out if the outlet pipe

Thanks for the help. I ended up dropping it off at a garage yesterday due to lack of time with work etc...

Just to conclude this post for the next poor sod that gets this issue...

The garage pretty advised me that this is a common issue and that they get loads of these through the door, they told me that I'm best off taking it back apart and draining the system again using a sealant against the thermostat housing / engine and against the thermostat housing / outlet pipe and leaving it with the system empty for a while whilst it sets solid.

I did humm and arr as to if I should have sealed the unit when I was putting it together but the guides on the internet didn't mention this so I went with it…I’d guess that you could potentially save yourself the price of the new outlet pipe / housing / thermostat just by sealing the one you have. Lesson learnt for next time J.

To give you an idea of pricing to have this unit fitted. The garage charged me their standard price for a coolant flush / replace (which they also did), at £40 and the unit does appear to be well sealed.

So although my pride has been hit a little I'm fairly happy with getting this resolved :)

(Another quick note*** If you go to buy the complete item from ebay (housing/thermostat/outlet pipe and its description said that it should arrive assembled and it comes in 3x separate boxes, then message the seller and tell them that you are not happy. I got half of my money refunded so the items ended up fairly cheap).

Sounds a good result. So get the garage to fit it and seal it and get a few quid back :-D
