Hi Guys.

Just found a windows 8.1 tablet PC on alibaba - http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/7-Inch-Windows-8-Tablet-PC-Ployer-MOMO7W-Intel-Atom-Z3735G-Quad-Core-7-IPS-screen/1089088_32289746534.html

Its £48 for a sufficient device!

I am thinking it could well come in handy as a Forscan device running in the car, maybe even elm config, would be more portable than using a laptop!

Depends on whether it has a full size USB slot and whether you can install normal programs on it like a PC. I'm not 100 % sure it is doable but it was something I was thinking of but not go round to buying anything and checking it out yet.

It seems to ha e the full size USB and being 8.1 it around be doable, I guess I will find out soon enough lol

I believe that was the point of Windows 8. The idea was that you can run the same program on a variety of devices (hardware capabilities pending)

Will be interested to see how you go on buddy.

very true again.

I am hoping it turns out to be an excellent investment! We shall see!

Fair enough I just can't tell from the pictures if it has a full size USB, most tablets I have looked at have Micro USB. Microsoft surface does have full size USB and there were some rubbish one's I saw on eBay running diagnostic software. Can't remember what the other ones were off hand.

Well I received the tablet yesterday, and im currently in the playing stage. For the cheap price, it looks quite good value for money. Need a 32GB card for it to make it worthwhile, as there is so little storage space on C after windows.

Anyway, I had a play earlier, installed all the software and all the files etc. The Mini USB on the device comes with a mini to standard adapter, and I plugged the ELM cable into it, and it lit up, so it seems to work in that respect. Installed all the drivers, installed the software and got it all ready to go, but then the car cannot be found. I think this is more a windows 8 thing than a tablet issue, so I emailed FORSCAN support, and await any advice they can offer. In the meantime I need to find a way to play with the drivers and get it all to talk together.

The tablet slipped through customs, so I didnt have to pay VAT (that saved me about £10) and also didnt have to pay Royal Mails £8 handling fee for international items.

Anyway, got to back the thing up and see if I can restore the backups, as earlier, I wiped it back to factory and was stuck with a chinese tablet, in chinese! took me a while to figure it out, and thankfully that has been resolved now (it had me worried!) and once I get that working properly, I will look to play with drivers, perhaps install as compatability mode and see if I can get her working!

All in all, if this works, it could be another fantastic investment...

Looking forward to see how you get on with this dude. As a thought have you thought about seeing if you could install 7 on it instead?

Looking at all the options mate... Once I find a way to reliably back it up I will be. If I can make it work i will be putting xp 7 and 8 on there with a backup image of each.

Sounds like a plan. Can't remember if I got forscan and my ELM installed ok on my desktop running 8.1 or not will have to try it when I get chance.

Aye I need to do a few logs and checks

I have just downloaded Forscan on my desktop and installed a driver automatically for 8.1 64bit and interface lights up OK and Forscan seems to connect OK to the interface, not tried connecting the car as it means moving PC to car and have not got time for that currently but will try to check it when I get chance,

I hope you can figure this out buddy as this is what my next plan was but I want to be able to run Forscan and IDS on it but IDS might be even more tricky.

Like I said before though I do wonder if the way Windows for mobile devices works differently than with windows for desktop.

  • Author

IDS is going to be harder I think, moreso for space consumed. But yeah I got the drivers installed, got the USB connected and it came up with a com port however when I plugged it into the car it wasn't able to connect to the car.

Which driver did you use?

Dunno used Windows to search the internet for it. Will have to look and see what it is listed as in device manager when I'm home at some point. At work tonight.

Will elm work on a linux based system like Mint for instance

  • Author

ELM may but the software I don't believe so. Elmconfig and the likes are all windows based. But I will keep my eye open for any tools that work on Linux

Thanks

thanks

i think ill buy a cheepo windows laptop and use that ,reading more in to the linux version there seems to still be a few minor issues

  • Author

Yeah I'm still having issues with Windows 8 at the moment. Think I will pop over to the Russian forum and see if I can get some assistance getting elm working.

when my elm327 arrived it came with a drivers disc "ch34ot" http://www.spanglefish.com/TunnelratElectronics/links.asp there is a driver download plus lots of other infor there

Another resource to check out, cheers :-)

It keeps you out of mischief.

On my 64bit windows 8.1 desktop the com port driver is listed as USB Serial CH340 the same as on my laptop running & 32bit if that helps any buddy. Like I said I just added the hardware and let windows search the internet for the driver for it.
