Thanks mate, yeah I think that's not working but I reinstalled drivers haven't yet had a chance to try it!

I have a little Win 8.1 tablet which is good, just find using it as a laptop it's a little low on physical memory as chrome with 10+ tabs murders the poor thing. Luckily Windows 10 has a good browser so this has sorted a few of the niggles :P

Still use it more than my laptop's when out and about even though they're 13/14 inches and that's still 11. Decent devices.

Aye, I just have to wrestle the drivers and when it connects I will be fine.

Right!

So, heres my review so far!

Lets just highlight the main positives and negatives:

Postives -

> its £48!

> Its a fully fledged tablet computer

> Its got all the benefits of a laptop without the bulk!

> Battery life is pretty good - I have had my external hard drive connected to it, and it powered my external hard drive, copied several gigabytes of data, and had a lifespan of about 2 hours!

> I can now play with my car via a virtual machine

> You get Office 365 Free!

Negatives -

> Its a 7 inch screen, it can make navigation a tad difficult if you suffer from fat finger syndrome, or like me - clumsiness!

> As of yet, I haven't got the drivers to work on Windows 8

> Its only got about 4GB of space available on the C Drive after windows is installed, so you will be best served buying a 32GB Class 10 memory card as your D drive, to store applications etc within.

Neutral:

> Connecting to the car with alarm bells, still makes me anxious, even though I have done it enough times before lol

> it is Chinese. Not that the product is bad, far from it! but, if you reset to factory settings, you have to reset the OS language, which to be fair is not difficult. But now and then you will want to get to a screen behind the scenes and its still Chinese. For this, I combated with Google Translate on my android Samsung Galaxy S4 mini, and it translated it very well!

> its got an on screen keyboard, but accepts bluetooth and usb keyboards. I have my eye on an bluetooth keyboard / touchpad for £12 on ebay and will probably be getting that at some point!

> I escaped paying VAT (YEY!) however, if your not so lucky, you will have to fork out around £10 for VAT and also the £8 international postage handling from Royal Mail whilst they sort all the paperwork out!

So to continue....

I managed to get my tablet up and running, although not quite as I wanted, it did get there. Using vmware player, I managed to run a basic virtual machine (just over 350mb RAM) and could navigate it easily. Having installed the drivers and the appropriate software, all is well! Initially FORSCAN could not detect the car, but ELMConfig would. So I connected ELMConfig, downloaded the central config, shut ELMConfig down and then restarted FORSCAN. Job was good! the car was picked up, did a scan on High and Medium speed, cleared the error codes generated from connecting ELMCONFIG to it, and now, I have a fully utilised tablet on hand, with all the main diagnostic tools I need.

Its easy to accomplish and for £48 doesn't break the bank, offers good portability, you can tuck it out the way and use it as and when you need it. If you wanted to, you could even find a means of leaving it wired in.

My next steps on this project are to see if I can find a way to allow the device to charge at the same time the USB is running. Normally with tablet PC's and a single Micro USB port, you can do only one or the other, but I have seen hacks that allow this to work, so if I can make it work great! Otherwise, even with the battery life it has - its a great buy and a great tool to have under the seat. Even better if I can find a way to make it charge and operate USB as you could pretty much hardwire it in!

ive just purchased a Dell mini net book with Xp for the same reason , not shure if im going to wipe Xp and install linux peppermint on to it

but im please you have got it working , just a pity about the missing drivers

aye, well others can get it working, but for some reason or another, I cannot fathom it - more playing is required me thinks.

Windows 8 has a lot of changes though, such as the replacement of BIOS with UEFI (for those geeks out there). But overall its not a bad interface for a touch screen, though I have installed the second start menu back so I get the old fashioned appearance.

  • 7 months later...

I have just bought a Linx 1010b from PC world for my birthday present to myself lol at least that is my excuse and I am sticking to it.

Installed Elmconfig and Forscan no problems and works straight out of the box with windows 10 on this tablet at least.

IDS installs and runs fine but the VCM2 software won't install so the VCM is not recognised by IDS.

I have looked at running a virtual machine but can't install from an ISO in a virtual machine for some reason, i don't really know much about UEFI to be honest and so far I am having no luck.

I have considered seeing if I could dual boot it with Winodws 10 and Windows 7 but again I can't get it to recognise a USB stick for the installation.

If I figure anything out I will update on this or if you have any ideas Jeebo let me know.

Micro USB for charging and 2 x full size USB 3 ports and HDMI out as well not bad at all.

32gb

Intel atom quad core 1.33ghz

32 bit win 10 even though it's a 64bit processor hence no issues using Elm or Forscan.

2gb ram

£159 from PC world but I can tomorrow claim for my free keyboard dock for it.

Oh yeah it also has an SD card slot for extra storage.

Very nice.

I just upgraded my tablet to 10 sadly though I haven't yet been blessed to get forscan to connect to the car

Well I now have it running IDS via Virtualbox with a Windows 7 installation to the SD card along with all the calibration files loaded on it, took ages to set it all up but it runs pretty quickly, I would say as quick as my dual core laptop does.

Runs Forscan and Elmconfig no problem on Windows 10.

Awesome for the money in my opinion, the only bug bear is I can't maximise the Elmconfig window so it's a tad on the small side on the relatively high resolution scree.

So I can run all my diagnostics on this now with a much longer battery life and much more ease of portability.

Chuffed to bits with getting it all working.

Thats an old ids version, does it say 86?

Simon, do you have a link to the win 10 drivers for the elm 327 drivers for Windows 10 as forscan does not detect my car on my tablet

Yes it is v86. It's much harder to update it to later versions with the clone VCM of mine as the VCM software needs updating too to work with newer versions.

The provider of the drivers is listed as www.winchiphead.com

3 driver files as below

C;\\windows\system32\CH341PT.DLL

C;\\windows\system32\drivers\CH341SER.SYS

C;\\windows\system32\drivers\serenum.sys

If you can't get what you need from the website listed or can't find those driver files let me know and I will find them and can email them to you if need be for you to try.

Oops just googled it and it's all Chinese.
