Fiesta Horn problems

I own a March 1999 Fiesta Ghia & recently the horn only operates intermittently. I've tried depressing various area of the steering wheel centre with no luck, then after a few days or a week, use of the horn will return.

I've been told that removal of the steering wheel centre/air bag cover to locate the fault could cause problems with the air bag operation.

Is there any way the horn could be re-wired to a separate switch to overcome this problem or is there another answer?

    True, but I think the problem lies with the 'switch' on the steering column.
