soulman123
I have noticed both front tyres have worn on the inside front, what are the likely causes of this ? And also on the rear n/s inside too. Curiosity really is booked in to be checked. I'm guessing something in the suspension worn ? Lol no very specific with rods bushes end ball joints lol What are the likely fails on these ? I did the arb bushes a few weeks ago nothing else caught my eye but I was not really looking. Guess could be worn shocks ?
troy45
Wheel alignment would be the first thing to check, course it would make sense to have the various suspension bushes etc checked at the same time.
artscot79
As above wheel alignment and a suspension check front wishbones' and rear upper arm bushes are the most common to fail
Vendee
I've had this problem on my Focus for 2 or 3 years now and I can't sort it. I keep the tracking adjusted and the pressures correct but I always get wear on the front inside edges. Last year I asked my garage to give the front suspension a good look over for problems but they say its fine. Its never failed an MOT in its life. I think its the camber out of adjustment (although there is no adjustment). I figure my 140k springs and dampers are worn which will increase the amount of negative camber, causing the wear on the inside edges. The 2.0 diesel engine is quite a heavy lump on the front and the car certainly doesn't handle as nicely as it did when it was new. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about it. If I knew that new springs and dampers would sort out the tyre wear, I'd replace them but I don't want to throw lots of money at a 9 year old car in the twilight of its life. I'm off to get new summer tyres fitted this morning. They will be knackered after 10k. :(
soulman123
He said they will start with tracking and inspect the suspension, I'm hopeful as they are a ford specialist. Wish I had done a tyre check sooner, it's wreck 3 tyres which will need replacing when they are done. I topped the air up regularly had a glance but did check the inside tyre just the outer and assumed the otters fine should be ok. Vender I feel your pain at chewing through tyres, even though the cars an old lady lol could be worth getting a set of springs and shocks from somewhere like euro ... or ride it like this till you get a new car. Maybe worth getting another garage to have a look, a fresh pair of eyes might spot something ?
Guest
When I bought mine, my steering wheel wasn't straight, it had just had 2 tyres on the front and had been tracked according to the dealer. I have a really friendly Kwik Fit by me, the guy said my Focus used to be 'a complete nightmare' to track until they had their new machine (Hawk? Or that may have been the previous one) Their new machine showed everything that's usually measured was correct, well fractionally off, but there were 4 more readings that were off, when they corrected these my steering wheel is straight and the tires seem to be wearing evenly. I have 2009 1.6 Zetec.
johnH
If tracking or alignment doesnt solve the issue i would say your taking cornering too fast. I didnt know this until a mate of mine who used to work for Vosa checked my tyres just before the Mot on my old focus and advised that this is more than common issue and garages capitalise on it for costs of tracking etc... Andy.B1971
How did you get on ?, inside tyre wear indicates that the wheels are pointing outwards (toeing out), hard cornering usually shreds the outer edge of the tyre. The rear of your car (toe) is adjustable also, IF the rear wheels are not set up correctly then the front will never be correct as the front rely on the rears being correct. Most fast fit type places use either the HUNTER or JOHNBEAN 4 wheel geometry setup with a print out before and after , it can be costly but maybe cheaper than repeat tyre purchases.... soulman123
John my speedy cornering days are over I drove gently well mostly lol Andy thebgaragebhave rebooked me in for the 23rd! There was a fire next door which has caused them issues. Reluctant to take it elsewhere as they are a trusted ford specialist.. used them for near 10 yeats now and are always on the money so will patiently wait. Will update. I would be happy if its the tracking a cheap fix! I think £30 although the shocks feel a bit worn feeling a lot more road!! But they will spot it what's up. auldreekie
Have the wheel bearings been checked? Sometimes worn bearings can result in uneven tyre wear
soulman123
I did mention to the garage on smootg roads a kind of rumble .. but a rock at 12/6 positions didnt show much in the way of play but he did say they can go and not have pkay ? .. he saidnwhen they have it in they will take it apart to investigate. Thus was the ns front wheel.

artscot79
I've had wheel bearings that had no play at all after inspection the bearings were close to collapse the tolerances are so precise these days the old shake of the wheel doesn't work a better method is to jack the car up put one hand on the shock and rotate the wheel if the bearings gone you feel it vibrate through the strut
soulman123
Auldreekie your out of the game lol and 10 push ups That's interesting art I always just rocked it, will try this method, makes sense. Wish I had kept a closer eye on the tyres it's wrecked some good ones, but lesson learnt. Fortunately I use public transport all week so it's not in use. soulman123
So the rear trailing arms had slight play on the bush, but not excessive and he said the rear springs are very rusted so doing that too. He could find nothing wrong with the front and could not figure out why the inside edges are worn. He did say don't bother changing them unless they fail but they are wrecking all my tyres. He did say maybe the rear bushes have affected it somehow? But said they will do the arms, springs and tracking and I should keep an eye on wear. Also bad news the clutch is slipping in 5th .. 4 hours labour plus parts So 2 arms 2 springs 1 tyre as I have 3, tracking oil change/filter £360 does that sou d reasonable for a ford specialist ? He didn't seem happy to do the rear arms as it's a hard job, they did one not long ago and the bolt snapped. Still have this nagging feeling something on the front it's wrong. Stodgey
I have the same issue on my '09 Zetec focus. Had the tracking checked and it was spot on. The guy told me that it could be tyre feathering. Apparently it only happens to good quality tyres (im running Khumo at the moment) and budget ones seem to be immune. soulman123
So the garage havr had the car back up on the ramp and have said they goy the wrong part. The part or bush on the main suspension arm is shot not the banana one or dog bone shaped one .. he said gord do the bush which will need the rear subframe to drop ans they can press it in situ hopefully. So all tyres have been changed I supplied 3 they supplied ome part woen one, tracking not done they supplied one tyre and a oil and filter change and charged £100 inclidong cost of chamhing other tyres. Booked in for a few weeks for them to do it. Ashame they misdiagnosed it they could have done it today. Hey ho .. hope my tyres dont get chewed up in 2 weeks .. minimum driving I guess. Hassen
Interested to see how it works out for you as I am considering changing shocks and springs at 110k miles on the clock. Got both rear swing arm bushes done yesterday and it helped make the car feel more stable when cornering.
Micro
Done < 60k miles in my Focus 2010 1.6 Zetec, swapping winter tyres off tomorrow or the day after, so will have a good look at mine (Nokian WR-A3). I don't recall any odd wear patterns on my old summer tyres when I took them off however. (Ran the old summers at 34psi all round - they were budget budget tyres though). soulman123
Those bushes have now been done, yesterday. The car handles tightly on cornering again, not vague with the worry of the feeling it's wondering. Tracking done to. Time will tell I guess. Also passed it's mot, phew lol.
TomsFocus
So does anyone with a Mk2/2.5 Focus not have inner edgewear issues then? Seems like they all do it with no explanation as to why! Mine were badly worn when I bought the car but didn't notice as it was inside...my 'enthusiastic' driving has always caused outer edgewear on previous cars way before inner became an issue so I was quite surprised how bad they were. The tracking wasn't far out but I had it adjusted anyway, and tbh it's worse now than before! Will have it done 'properly' when I have the tyres replaced but want to make sure it won't chew through the new tyres the same way if possible. As I said, all tyres are coming off (prob tomorrow) as swapping winters so will check again then. Running mine at the factory recommended preasure in winter.
