Fuel Filler Pipe

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I originally posted this in general since it was generic ford filler related but now I think its specific to the focus so am re posting it here in the hope someone knows something.

Long story short, filler pipe was buggered and dropping diesel all over the floor, fix was to replace the whole filler pipe as the internals were damaged and below is what followed...

Righty, seems dropping the tank isn't necessary, you can access the rubber pipes, its a hassle but is doable.

what is completely blody impossible to do however is remove the damn filler pipe.

So, we removed the filler cap, undid the two bolts and slacked off the filler pipe from body, disconnected rubber hoses from pipe and then we were stuck, filler pipe will physically not come out of the car, its wedged between the spare wheel housing and the (subframe? where the coil meets the body an runs from one side to the other) no matter what we tried it will not rotate enough or move enough to come out.

So, short of removing the whole works or bending the filler pipe im at a loss, no wonder its not in Haynes, they would neeed an extra spanner on their wee scale

any ideas?

undo the bottom shock bolts, jack under rear subframe and loosen bolts that hold subframe in place up through centre of springs. bolts may have to come out, lower down subframe, .that should give you wriggle room

If you loosen the rear subframe wont you need a 4 wheel alignment?

I was hoping this wasn't the case, I couldn't find anything in Haynes to do it but from the looks of it, theres quite a bit more to undo than those two bolts, ? it would need to be dropped down about 6 inchs...

yeah, I think it would make sense to have it done, at the very least just to keep things right

Only issue is the bolts can be a right sod to get off had to cut them off in the past on the mk1 as above undo shock bolts probably the handbrake cable then undo the upper arm bolts the ones each side under the rear chassis that will allow it to drop I think

all im doing is relaying what ford etis instrutions say for you.

You may be right I can only remember when my bushes were done to drop the rear they undid the handbrake or it wont drop

ok, i really appreciate the help guys, im just not sure that's within my grasp just yet as I can see it going horribly wrong an needing some more powerful tools. may have to take it to a garage and concede defeat for now :(

Kudos Dee on getting this far with this job, Shame it is proving to be more of a !Removed! to actually complete!

Booked in for Friday.

Since they going to the hassle of ripping all of that off is their anything else that would be worth while replacing whilst they in there?

Oh its not so bad, its been really good apart from the things that haven't ;)

Well the filler pipe saga is over and my pocket is a tonne fifty lighter :(

They had to drop the whole damn thing at the back, both sides, they replaced the pipe and its working fine now on the 10 quid test amount I just tried, ill be filling her up with the usual v power tomorrow so will know for sure all is well.

You can clearly see the improved design of the filler neck on the newer pipe from 2010, there isn't an overflow tube from the actual filler like on the 2008 model, just a single overflow pipe from the rubber surround as usual. The flaps inside the filler neck have a couple of plastic guides to prevent the diesel hose going in wrong and more importantly to stop the filler adaptor thing from going in to far.

Ill get a picture up later but basically, be careful if your using the plastic adaptor on the older design, it can easily bugger up the flaps and is an expensive pain in the !Removed! to fix.

Did they use the filler neck from a mk3  focus as you mentioned a newer design which I can only find for mk3.
do you know if the mk3 filler neck fits the mk2.5?
