Insurance For 17 Years Old

Featured Replies

My daughter just passed driving test and is looking for first insurance ever.

She is not getting my Ford (I'll keep it to myself! :)) so she'll get my other car - Toyota Yaris SR.

The cheapest quote I had so far was 1338 with Tesco box insurance.

Is there any way to bring it down?

Any advice is highly appreciated :)

Hi Dan,

Tried Adrian Flux yesterday and the quote was almost 400 quid more than in Tesco.

Meanwhile, Tesco shed a further 30 quid off their quote so I went with them, sorry.

If she is a student, try Endsleigh.

Totally forgot about Endsleigh, thanks!

Best thing to do is get both yours and your dear ladies name on the policy with her, having experienced drivers on the policy can improve the cost of insurance a lot.

Funnily enough, putting my name on the policy (with all that ongong claim and stuff) brought the price down from 1800 to 1300. But, adding my missus too as a third driver, pushed the price up to 1500! Where's logic in that?

Another bizzarre thing was that in the initial quote I incorrectly stated that the car has been acquired in 2014. When I reviewed the quote before finally pressing that "Buy now" button, I spotted it and corrected to 2010. The effect was that the price went down by 30 quid. WTF?

What difference does that make to insurance company when I bought the car?

The telematics box has been installed in this car today. Interestingly, Insure The Box, Drive Like A Girl, Sky Insurance and Tesco Box Insurance are the very same company, trading under variety of brands - the real name is Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Company of Europe Limited. In which case I don't understand how Tesco Box quote was 1300 and Drive Like A Girl - 3000? I mean, if they are the same company, why such a difference for essentially the same thing?

It's because the less time you have had the car the less familiar you are with it, therefore the less likely to have an accident.

As for the company name, its the fact they have different bills to pay, they are all underwritten by the same company but their expenditure differs, and they give different quotes.

The thing is that this is not the underwriters I was talking about;

The Box Innovation Group is the owner of those brands and uses the same underwrite for all of them,

If anything I would expect that their insurance sold under Tesco and Sky brands would be more expensive that the one sold as Insure The Box (their own brand), because of the branding royalties.

Besides, if my five-minutes research into the company is right, they were using the same underwriter (Catlin) for all of the brands,

I just don't get it.

Insurance is a weird world....

It is indeed! :)

Lots of insurance companies are the same underneath - Admiral, Elephant, Bell, Diamond and a few others are all owned by Admiral...but Admiral is always most expensive (however they will match their sister companies) - the reason, Admiral is the best known brand so draws the biggest audience who won't necessarily look around... I'd guess that's the same for Tesco, huge brand that everyones heard of compared to the smaller 'box' companies.

The funny thing is that the huge brand that is Tesco actually cost me less than the original 'box' company. :) I still don't get it.

  • 4 weeks later...

So Adrian Flux has quoted me double then any other insurer I have tried regarded modified car insurance!

Wanting me to pay £2,650 for a 3 Cylinder Engine with FORD MANUFACTURED Modifications?!?!
