I have taken the bumper off but am struggling to get the side vent off can anyone help?

I ve a MK 1 but its possibly the same.From inside the boot looking at the vent there are some plastic solid tabs located on the rim.I just pressed them down from the car body and it popped out.

Thanks for the tips just found this in my 2011 1.6 tdci. One question the vent you talk about behind the bumper. Is there one each side? My leak is on the near side but also wet but not as bad on offside.

Thanks William, one last question how long should I allow for the job? Bumper off seal and put back. Wondering if it's a job I can do on a lunch break or need a few hours? Going to start with the grease and the rear lights first and cross fingers! 

I think your going to need a couple of hours.Have you located the ingress for definite at the vents?Its always a good idea to do them anyway.

No haven't started yet, but what i do know it's it's not coming from above everything above floor level bone dry and no signs of water. So can only assume lights or vents. 

In that case might do lights tomorrow and try and get a few hours to do the bumper. 

Worst thing about car leaks, finding them in winter when it seems to rain constantly!

Ok guys this is looking worse than I thought passenger footwells are wet too front and back, is it possible it could have run from the back and under the carpets whilst car was in motion? No idea how long it's been leaking for. 

I can't really see that happening but I might be wrong.As said if the boot is leaking badly then it usually pools in the spare wheel bay.

Others have reported water from the tyre well running forward under the seats to the passenger footwells under braking etc

ok thanks. Absolutely livid this is happening in a fairly new car. Had 2 other cars (my oh's) which have leaked in last 18 months both MGs thought that was all behind us now.

Will start with the rear lights today i think and then try and test then bumper. Probably a good idea to get a car cover i guess to stop any more getting in and allowing it to dry a bit.

 

 

 

Out of interest phoned ford to see if they knew of any particular points that were problematic and how much to investigate and fix, £105 per hour just to investigate, which would take 3-4 hours. If they had to start stripping car then hour by hour. Put simply could run over £1000. 

Anyone know where specifically this gromit im looking for is located? do i need bumper off first?

Surely that's a 'we can't be bothered with that job' kinda quote?  Can't believe Ford charge £100 p/h labour?

well its £85 ph hour plus the vat which she calculated to be £105. Would be nice in 2016 when they have cars that can park themselves they might build something that can keep the water out for more than a couple of years

Glad I don't use main dealers lol, thought that'd be BMW/Merc sort of labour cost!!

My sisters C1 was only a year old when she bought it and full of water from a dodgy boot seal - replaced under warranty but they didn't bother removing carpet of drying it out.  That was after she'd got rid of a Corsa due to water ingress breaking interior electrics.  Some people seem to get all the leaks! :s

Bmw/merc labour rates! Your having a laugh. You can nearly double that for those makes,

not a great start so far , cant get top rear light screw to budge, dont have a tool wide enough, scared its going to snap soon :(

Use a paint scraper or something equally flat/wide and push the top of the light in with the palm of your hand.

Hey all, 

So took the light off and greased up the gaskets which were smaller than i had imagined, but to be honest there didnt appear to be any evidence that water had been going in there. and even tried pouring water around the area and under the lip of the bumper that you can see there and nothing obviously coming through there either which now is making move forwards and thinking wheel arch area , looking behind the sound deadening fluff stuff does not appear wet in any way apart from around the bottom where it meets the floor where the material is pretty wet (and probably slowly dripping out into boot floor.

The thick paper towel i put down along the ridge before it drops down to rear bench all seems quite wet too so something still on the move. Pulled the roof liner down slightly at the back from boot and looked around both C pillars but again no obvious signs of water or even dry water marks, boot hinges bone dry.

And becoming more convinced the water cant be running all the way to the front of the car, at least not in that quantity.  It seems like im going to have to bit by bit dismantle the whole interior at this rate

Would you guys rather I start a new thread for any progress help on this?

The other thing i was wondering, does anyone know of any specialists in water ingress repair in south east?

must have been couple of litres at least.

after a lot of sponging out and a roll of plenty it was dry again. Stuck some towels in the suspect corner (nearside rear) and have been out for the day which has been dry but towel got fairly wet still. Had a look for earlier mentioned bung below the filter and hey presto water gushed out for a fair while then had a squeeze as best I could of the filter "media?" Which was sarurated  And loads more came out. So hoping this may be root cause.

going to rain tomorrow again annoyingly. Is it safe to leave the bung out for now so any exess will drain away as it happens? 

Off side seemed fine media dry too.
