Non-abs Wheel Bearing In Abs Car.

Featured Replies

Went to garage earlier this week and had wheel bearing fitted. The abs light came on afterwards- mechanic suspected it was a non-abs wheel bearing that was fitted.

Anyone had a similar experience, Is it safe to drive in the mean time? From what I understand the sensor won't be able to detect the speed of the bearing, but other than that it should be OK to drive for a couple of days? They're refitting it on Tuesday

Its safe to drive but ABS will have been disabled. If the mechanic doesn't know the correct bearing to fit then frankly I'd take my car nowhere near them again. Nothing difficult with doing a little research to find the right part.

Could also be that they've damaged the sensor whilst doing the work or the attached wiring

I thought it was a relatively straight forward job

I thought it was a relatively straight forward job

It is, which is why I wouldn't trust them to do anything more complex

The wheel bearing itself has nothing to do with the ABS. There is a sensor and sensor ring which operate together. I'd try getting the sensor cleaned and check that the sensor ring is fitted correctly.

you have to prise off the abs ring prior to pressing bearing out, bet who done it hasnt refitted it afterwards, or the bearing has been pressed in the wrong way round.

On the mk6 the front ABS ring is part of the bearing. I changed one front and one rear on my other fiesta as a result of its MOT failure.

That's the rear, thought we were talking about the front, my bad :)

my bad, assumed it was rear, lol ,post doesnt specify front or rear,

Reached a joint fact then I suppose! Haha, front IS part of the bearing, Rear IS NOT part of the bearing

Yes, sorry I didn't specify! It was the read wheel bearing.

The mechanic said he was given the wrong part for my car- I'm not sure how its from eurocarparts

I was thinking it might be one of these. I regret not doing it myself now but I've read it can be a fiddly job if you don't have the right parts. And he's fixing it again for free obviously so I'm not going to try messing with it for now.

So is the consensus that it's safe to drive with for a couple of days until it gets sorted? The abs light is on but I haven't noticed much different in the handling/ braking.

safe in as much as you can drive it, unsafe as in if you do have to brake in an emergency you wont have abs,

im still guessing the mech has forgotten to refit the sensor ring.
