So, After watching a video previously, I began to understand that the EGR gasses where introduced AFTER the turbo and where not injected into it.... Right?

Well... thats the question!? Does it go in before the turbo and travel through, or does it go after?

So I have had a look and most the info I can find suggests it goes in after.... So I want to see what other people thing...

Hopefuly Mondeo TXS 2.2 comes along and joins in, as we did kinda hijack that other thread, though it was related... :p lol

So, heres one quote from another forum

The exhaust doesn't go through the intercooler. The exhaust is coming from the high-pressure side of the exhaust manifold, before it goes out through the turbo.

So, that seems to agree with what I understand...

Turbo or turbine air induction does not mix with EGR and modern clean diesel requirements.

I am curious... first off... does it actually go into the turbo, and secondly, what is everyone else s belief? I was always dubious about things like turbo cleaners in the oil tank, it never made sense, I knew the EGR spewed gas out and back in, but I was never sure whether it was re-injected prior to, or after the turbo, but I must admit, I always thought it was after...

Will be interesting to get peoples thoughts :)



If i'm picking up what your asking then yes the above is correct. the exhaust gas is added just before the intake manifold where is meets with the intake air from the turbo via the intercooler.

Exhaust gas drives the part of the turbocharger which then impels & compresses air from the intercooler into the cylinders, resulting in a bigger bang !

One of many benefits of blanking the E.G.R.V. is that all the exhaust pressure ( energy ) spins the turbocharger faster resulting in more power.

Therefore the exhaust gases & the turbocharger function are inextricably linked :)

An E.G.R.V.'s sole purpose is to reduce Nox emissions by recirculating cooled waste exhaust gases into the combustion chambers - lowering the combustion temperature - blanking the E.G.R.V. sends these gases where they should go - through the turbo resulting in more power amongst many other benefits

The vacuum caused by the air going in after the turbo and pulling the air through the turbo helps to spool the turbo, but when you disable it, the exhaust vacuum produces the same effect, or better.

This is why I dont believe turbo cleaners can possibly work. If the gas never goes near the turbo (in essence, its always blown away from the turbo - by the turbo) then the cleaner cannot reach the turbo?

I've never used turbo cleaner but I believe it's sprayed directly onto the vanes inside the turbo body & this is the only simple way to clean them internally ?

There are some that you put in the tank which burn and apparently clean it, which is what I believe to be codswallop :p

you will need to stick fuel line magnets on too then for that to have an effect :lol:

Exhaust gases drive one side of the turbo & that is why the vanes become carbonised - causing them to stick

blocked the egr on c-max spools up so my quicker in lower gears might try terra clean for injectors nothing wrong with them just to see if it makes any difference as they claim it does

It makes an awesome difference mate. Had it done on my Mondeo, so far I'm averaging 65mpg and the car is more responsive

I have heard a few people talk about Terra clean. Most people say the same as you James, it makes a big difference., How does this stuff actually work. can it be used on both petrol and diesel cars ?. I have also heard though that Ford do not recommend using products like this on your car.

Ford don't like it because it prevents egr and dpf failure which means they loose out on charging a lot for a small part...

It works on petrol and diesel and basically it's a charged fuel, the charged particles travel through the hit side of engine, through injectors so the combustion, the exhaust are all cleaned out. The charged particles basically attract the carbon and pull it out so the carbon buildup breaks down, that's why more often than not a load of coke is left behind the exhaust pipe as it works. Now the injectors are clean they spray more efficiently, increasing engine performance. The car can breathe better because the exhaust is clear, the standard carbon buildup around the egr is broken down so it works better and the dpf is part cleared if not almost completely because the carbon had been broken up and thrown out too.

Remember that Terraclean is more about preventative maintenance than ''fixing'' issues - sourced from their website

Couldn't agree more. I plan on getting every used car I buy in the future the terraclean service, it makes the car work less and reduces the risk. The advice is to use it yearly for best results.

Diesels will benefit more than petrol engines

www.oilem.com gives good advice regarding E.G.R.V.'s & D.P.F. issues & other fuel /oil related info - essential reading I think

Just bought a Mondeo 2.2 Titanium x yesterday. the guy I bought it off took the egr off, although he gave it to me in case I want to put it back on. Think I might look into getting this done on the car. I take it it will still benefit my car even though the egr has been taken off,

Still a bit warey of putting it through my wee Focus ST though lol.

I wonder why he took it off instead of simply blanking it ?

Car still runs fine. got to give it maybe 4 or 5 seconds once you start it to idle right, but my mates car also did this.

Wont do any damage to the car with it being off will it ? The guy also had a decat pipe which he didn't get round to fitting which he also gave me. The guy was planning on a re map also. but according to him he preferred rear wheel drive cars. but in his defence he did have the car advertised for sale or exchange for a quick rear wheel drive car.

I bypassed the E.G.R.V. on my Mondeo ST TDCi without any issues - so I doubt it'll do any damage

It'll have a DPF - not a cat - so not sure about the decat pipe ?

Going back to James's original question - Archoil make very good EGRV & Turbo cleaning products that do work post combustion process
