August New Car Sales. The winner is...

Featured Replies

The UK scrappage scheme continued to help new car sales in August with sales up 6% from a year ago, the second consecutive month of growth.

The number of new cars sold in the UK in August was 67,006, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said.

It attributed the rise to the scrappage incentive scheme, worth £2,000 a car, which came into effect in May.

However, total sales since the start of 2009 are still 21.5% lower than the same period last year.

September will be a key test for the industry when the new '59' number plates are introduced.

August typically accounts for just 3.3% of annual new car registrations, whereas September normally makes up 17%.

Does anyone know whether an actual 'sale' is based on the day you signed the purchase/order form, (which was 21st July in my case) or when the car is actually built (5th September, again in my case). Just slightly curious as to which month my own car purchase will fall in.

And it'll be interesting to see if the Fiesta can overtake the Focus, (in the statistics, not on the roads), when the September sales results are released.

The figures relate to the date the car is registered at the DVLA,the order date and build dates are not relevent.

If you look at the year to date figures,Fiesta is top and focus is second, not sure why there has been a change for August.

Maybe the delivery delays caused a particular "trough" in the actual arrival of Fiestas to be registered and picked up in August?

I would guess that the fiesta, being the samller cheaper car, that it is more likley to be a private purchase when people will wait for the new 59 plates to come out. The focus, on the other hand, could be more of a company purchase and they are less concerned about when the registration takes please. I am sure that the Fiesta will regain its crown when the September figures are released . . .

I'm sure it will do mate. :)

We would buy the Focus over the Fiesta any day as its bigger more comfortable and all round better family car, it's no contest really.

We have both models, I use the Fiesta and Hubby uses the Focus we both prefer the Focus and its 9 years old! it’s just better all rounder shame it’s not a diesel as that would top it.
