Cold Start Oil Light Stays On For A While

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a new 1.5TDCi Focus and I have changed the oil a few days ago. After that, on a cold start the oil light stays on for about 1.5 seconds. I am wondering if this is normal or not?

I have checked the oil level at both hot and cold and its at the max marker.

Thanks,

John

isn't the oil light oil pressure, I didn't think we had oil level sensors.

id have thought cold oil will take slightly longer to get moving and built up pressure but perhaps not.

Yes thats what i'm worried about. Oil light stays on 5 seconds after a cold start. Is this damaging? I did change the oil 2 weeks ago and then this happened.

is the oil filled correctly? check the dipstick to make sure its between min/max in the morning. if its closer to min then top it up slightly.

Yep its at the max marker.

Did you use the correct type of oil (viscosity and specifications)?

Did you use the correct type of oil (viscosity and specifications)?

5W-30 yes

And which specifications? The specifications are even more important than the viscosity of the oil.

Ford prescribes the WSS-M2C913-D oil specifications for most engine types. As an alternative the 5W20 oil with the WSS-M2C948-B specifications can be used on most engine types.

The use of an incorrect type of oil will void the warranty. I do not know the UK warranty regulations but in the Netherlands the Castrol Magnatec oil with the correct Ford specifications is the only oil approved (and recommended) by Ford.

Yup, Castrol Magnetec 5w-30 A5 is what I used!

The Castrol Magnatec 5w-30 A5 exceeds the Ford specifications and is perfect for most Ford engine types.

Did you also change the oil filter?

I did, yes

If your Red oil light stays on you should ring your local dealership for more info,

Could be an oil pump issue etc

These Ecorattles are becoming Troublesome

Jamie

p.s i thought the correct thickness/grade was 5W-20

Its not an ecorattle! Its a diesel (which is rattly anyway!) The owners manual says 5w-30 so I used that

how new is it? i assume theres some sort of special oil they put in the engine initially for a period of time before you can start doing regular oil changes?

Less than 1 year old. Built in January!

Ring your dealer and get them to check it out, it may be a software issue that keeps light on and could be coincidental that you have changed oil recently.

Will do; thanks for your help people.

Have narrowed it down to it probably being the anti drain back valve; I found a similar pic here:

It's the hole at the bottom where the oil filter slots in. I don't think I seated it properly so it allowed oil to drain back to the sump which makes sense when cold starting the car the oil has to be pumped round again! I've seated the oil filter properly (I hope) this time and I guess I will find out after a cold start tomorrow morning if this worked.

Okay this hasnt worked either. What could it be? I have no idea what it could be anymore!

It's under warranty - so why not take it back to the dealer ?

my fiesta does this every cold start. I figured it was just the car pumping the oil round- warm start its fine. got told it was normal in the fiesta club :)

  • 4 years later...

Know this is a old thread but did you ever resolve the issue? I have the same on my 1.5 tdci mk7 fiesta 2013

my 1.6 petrol did this.... changed the filter made no difference....

was the oil particularly hot when you did the change ?….  what I think happened on my one was the pressure relief valve went odd on me....  The heater element in the thermostat (yes some of them do !!!) had gone wrong and she'd being continuing to use … whilst the gauge didn't EVER show it running hot, the main cooling fan used to run nearly all the time and now and then you could tell its was a little warmer than it should be....

I was on the spanners for 10 years …. but doing this change the oil was way hotter than I'd ever experienced.... just as I was cleaning around filter housing there was a sound like something metal dropped inside the engine ! and a new massive gush of oil jumped out of the filter housing and burnt my hand.... (never had this behaviour on multiple changes on the same car before....)

As soon as it started up the light wouldn't go out.... left longer than I thought safe waiting....   ended up checking everything 3 times.... of course nothing I'd done.  So revved it a bit and the light would go out.... we used it like this for 6 months, then fitted a new oil pump (which includes the relieve valve) and all was good.... its done another 30k miles and never missed a beat

I'd start with the relief valve..... its quite common to play on some of their engines

  • 1 month later...

I had some enthusiasm to pull out the oil pressure relive valve off the old pump....

the cause of the low idle oil pressure is quite obvious...    NICE designed to fail spring involved !!!!
