Tuning Box Vs Remap - Help

Featured Replies

I really want to get bluefin too it was one of the reasons I got a ecoboost and was going to order 1 strait after I bought my car and then I started reading posts about gearbox syncros failing and hve been in 2 minds since, very appealing tho 40hp for 399.

Have been using Superchips for 6 months now and had no issues so far.

Sent from my iPhone using Ford OC

Anyone got any recommendations for changing the air filter or does the stock one do enough if im going to map this?

Have a look at the K&N 57S.

My previous experience with regards to tuning boxes vs remaps is this:

Tuning box - cheap, gives an ok performance increase (and MPG due to better throttle response), easy to fit, not 100% perfect

Proper remap - much more expensive, gives a much better performance increase due to better fueling + boost increase if VNT turbo etc

Basically go initially with a tuning box as they are only around £60, they increase the rail pressure due to fooling the pressure sensor into thinking that its lower than it is - this in turn means that more fuel is being injected due to the higher pressure. This can however sometimes cause issues with the injectors due to the extra fuel pressure they are now under, the tuning box just makes the whole OEM map richer everywhere. This will give you gains all over the map, however this also means that some parts of the map are being slightly overfueled but you should noticed an increase in low down torque.

For a proper remap (using a rolling road) the map will be tweaked to suit your car and setup, this is the best option if you are wanting to go all out for your goals, but comes at a cost.

For the remaps that just remap the ECU with a generic map I would just go with a tuning box as the ECU map being uploaded is for someone elses car - it will be better than a tuning box but not as good as a proper remap.

Those are my experiences I have had with the various mapping options, when I get my Fiesta 1.4 TDCi this weekend (hopefully) I will be looking to plug in a tuning box and do a few breathing mods) That will give the 'best bang for your buck' in my opinion.

£60 for a box is £60 wasted i.m.o. - a decent one will cost a lot more

Point taken, it was just an example cost, a tuning box will be cheaper than a remap but still give some gains, I did manage to get a fairly good used one for that sort of price on a previous car. I will be putting up a thread as soon as I get my Fiesta and use it as almost a 'testbed' sort of car.

Costs aside . . . I suppose the crux of box v remap i.m.o. is something like this :

Do I want my engine's operation to be partially fooled by false information which is not entirely specific to my engine ?

OR

Do I want my engine's operation to be fully managed by correct information specifically written for my engine ?

My choice is the latter.

I do agree that a bespoke remap is better than a generic one & that a generic remap is better than a '' one size fits all '' tuning box.

Bluefin & similar generic maps are at least tested & written for a specific engine - although 2 identical engines, unless brand new are rarely identical due to mileage accumulated, wear & many other factors.

Bluefin arrived and mapped, my god that little 1L engine just blew me away.

3rd to 80 in a few seconds is insane from what i had before, thanks very much!

Whey hey. Glad you like your 'new' pocket rocket. Let us know what it does to your fuel economy and have fun.

The thing that I find surprising is that they are measuring 158bhp from stock 140ps engine!

Im running a 100ps stock and getting 148

plus, scotland is always wet which doesnt help, havent had a dry day yet

Its of puma speed i think it must be a mistake, they have a 350hp upgrade for the 1.6 t cost abt 4k

So 4k for 350 hp on the 1.6t, thing is what else do u need to change? Wil lthe gearbox need new rations to get the most of the power, up rate clutch? Brakes etc surly its a big bill on top of the 4k
