Warm Starting Issues

Featured Replies

OK so this will be my last post for a while before i completely give up on this car, My next stage will be to give it the Basil Fawlty treatment.

My MKII 2005 1.6 VCT-TI Focus sometimes will not start when warm. This left my in a very embarrassing situation this morning.

I stalled at a set of traffic lights then I could start the engine again. The HUD display wasn't dim. The engine cranks. The e mobiliser LED was flashing while cranking.

I got the car to start by bump starting at about 3-5mph. I sometime have this issue joint with a P060c Powertrain code. This sometimes happens when for example I park, go to the shop and get back in the car.

The car never does this on a cold start!

I was going to have this looked at in the new year but now it seems more dangerous.

Any Ideas.

P060c is pcm Powertrain Control Module. This fault code could be misleading and be nothing to do with the problem you have. It definitely needs further investigation into what the actual fault is! Unfortunately there is no quick fix it could be a cluster fault as its known tho code will come up the flashing says its still immobilized hence why it wasn't starting the car will require diagnostics I'm afraid before it refuses ti start at all

I was hoping it was going to be simple. I didn't think it was the battery as the engine cranks. The P060C doesn't always appear. sometimes the car will start but will display that code. sometimes like today, not at all and sometimes the car will start but the immobilizer light will be flashing.

Is a cluster code something that can be read on the dash screen?

get yourself an ELM 327 device, I might be wrong but I think I read somewhere that the dash doesn't display everything.

I have one of these bad boys.

That's how I was able to get the P060C code. are the DTC codes on the dash different to these?

I would change crankshaft sensor and have mess with fusebox wires in passenger foot well. Only very expensive equipment will show the fault, if you're in RAC or AA they should flag up the fault codes. I had the exact same fault, turned out to be both problems and only fail when warm so hard to diagnose . Think the wire fault displays "engine system fault" so maybe is cranshaft sensor which doesn't show up on cheap code readers. It maybe that the sensor is loose they are very close to oil filter.

I'm hoping, as everyone does its not going to be expensive. I'm going to send the car over to Halford Autocentres for a Diagnostic test. £49.99. Not too bad. My local indy quoted me £79.99

If it is the crank shaft sensor, it seems to be cheap and quick to replace....being optimistic again!

Hope you get it sorted, read all the comments and I'm really intrigued as to what it could be,keep updated and good luck

Ill keep you updated. Might not be before Christmas. bit ill let you know

The plot thickens!!!!!!

The error code i'm getting then the car refuses to start it a PATS code of 1:6. which i believe is an error with the connection between the PATS and the ECU. my problem is looking like a faulty ecu.

this sounds really really expensive!! any advice??

Like i said next time mess with the wires in the passenger foot well fuse box, it could also be a key fault.

  • Author

i will do. i've tied both key. so ive ruled that out. am i looking for anything in the fuse box?

Just drop the fusebox down and have someone mess with the wires of the multiplugs while turning over.

PATS: Passive anti theft system ignition key transponder signal is not valid.

see here.

So yours is intermittent ands still looking like loose connection or that fuse they are talking about needs cleaning up a bit. Just won't be anything like ecu its always trivial. The clue is when warm problem occurs.

  • Author

will do this. also gonna check fuses, as that was the fix on the forum link. :)

It was the fix, yours is intermittent so check wiring first.

  • Author

all the fuses in the engine bay seem to be in tacked. had a play around with the wires in the cabin fuse box. (didnt check the fuses, as the map didn't seem correct) I got it to happen again. I connected up my odb device and found an error code.

P1260 Theft Detected - Engine Disabled

so somethings is going wrong. im starting to the the p060c fault isn't linked and they are two completely different faults. I did try and do a ECU reset. unplugged the battery, turned on all lights and held the horn, but the codes remain.

:(

I had a a similar prob with my 2005 mk2 focus i changed the cam and crank sensors which you can do yourself i also changed the spark plugs and leads...the prob still happened but not as much in the end i was advised to use my spare key for a few weeks to see if prob occurred since i have used the spare key the car has started first time everytime...hope this helps

  • Author

Hi

Spare key does the same thing. Was thinking about replacing those. Is there a guide kicking around?

  • Author

just seen a video for the crank sensor! thats !Removed! easy. not sure about the cam

The cam sensor is even easier.its at the top of engine at rear of rocker cover ..i will take a pic up when i get home...this seems to be a really common prob with these cars have even talked to people that never even got prob sorted

  • Author

that would be great! Im pretty sure thats the video i've just seen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEoixGFE6o4

Although american the engine looks the same. No wait thats the cam shaft!

How do you replace the crankshaft sensor?

The cranksensorvis underneath the car ifvyou locate the oil filter its not far from it only one bolt holds it in place is a little tricky to get.there should be a guide on here that shows pic etc will haveva look

The engine in the video is different to mine ....mines is a 2005 mk2 1.6 petrol...

I have the same car as you. Ignore the video, I could be having a moment.

If you have any photos its would be a great help!!
