1.6 Tdci

Featured Replies

Hi All

I have just bought a fiesta 1.6 tdci sport van 2010

I have a few questions and will be grateful for any help.

Firstly is the 1.6 tdci a good engine? What if any are weak points?

Can I upgrade the standard Bluetooth stereo easily?

Is the cover over spare wheel the same as in the cars with a bit of polystyrene to the right of it?

1.6 tdci is a DV6, we don't really sing its praises on here but there are a lot of them about so bound to get a lot of problems crop up.

I don't think I see as many issues with the slightly lower tuned version in the fiesta as with the 110 version.

Is yours the 90Ps or 95Ps with DPF?

>Can I upgrade the standard Bluetooth stereo easily?

If you're meaning Bluetooth low (handsfree only) to Bluetooth high (handsfree, BT audio/music , USB) yes. You need to swap the Bluetooth module (approx £80 second hand) and 30 mins of a dealers time (or someone with ford ids). Installing USB is easy. Can't remember parts cost there but probably up to £80

I can dig out details from my notes if you want more info.

Thanks for reply Jack

When you say Bluetooth module do you mean the head unit? What is the unit I should be looking for?

Is the usb for the connection of the phone ? Can music and calls not be achieved wirelessly?

Cheers Vin

Thanks for reply

Mine is 95ps it says it's just 1.6 tdci sport so I'm not sure about DPF it's a 2010 how would I know?

Welcome to the forum,

I highly recommend blanking the egr valve

Guide: http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/42915-guide-fitting-egr-blanking-plate-16tdci-engine/

And upgrading the induction filter

Guide:

http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/36783-green-cotton-performance-induction-filter-fitting-guide/

If fitting an aftermarket headunit you will require a Double Din conversion kit for your model of fiesta,

Available from most places such as dynamic sounds.co.uk

as for headunit I highly recommend anything from pioneer as they also have parrot Bluetooth systems built in.

I can guide you through the conversion process it's much the same as my focus guide here: http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/63689-guide-fitting-aftermarket-headunit-mk25-focus-2008-2011/

> When you say Bluetooth module do you mean the head unit? What is the unit I should be looking for?

No - its a little black box sitting behind the glovebox (near fusebox)

Off top of my head it is part number 85mt-19c112-an or later (e.g. ap, at, etc). Best to get one from a fiesta if possible.

>Is the usb for the connection of the phone ? Can music and calls not be achieved wirelessly?

It can - but only with the Bluetooth module that supports USB. USB is for sticking a USB in with music on it, but with the right module you can stream music too.

If it's a 95 PS it has a DPF. Just something to be mindful of.

What sort of mileage and journeys do you do?

If the DV6 engine has been well maintained (like Lenny's engine) then it should be ok, but they aren't known for being that good and are usually avoided due to issues with blocked oil lines causing turbo failures etc. As long as the van isn't doing stop start town driving and is serviced correctly as per schedule it should be ok, my dad had a C3 Picasso which the DV6 engine in it, I warned him about the engine and the DPF needing to be up to temperature and after a few months the DPF warning light came on due to him doing short town drives.

As I said though, as long as its been serviced properly before you get it and you carry on ensuring its serviced correctly it should be ok - EGR blanking is also recommended.

It will be a real mix of use really some 5 minute runs and some 30 minutes and a few 3 hourly runs 2 to 3 times a year

. What does the DPF do and what do I need to be mindful off? .

Cheers

Hi Lenny

Thanks for replying . Can you tell me what does changing the induction filter do? I'm afraid I'm used to older Diesel engines and old plant so it's a bit of a steep learning curve for me . The last fiesta van I had was a 1985 1.6 diesel !

Regarding the head unit and blue tooth I'm afraid this has all moved on at a fast pace since I was changing head units years ago.

I'd like to stick to ford head unit if possible so wondering if there is a better option available I could buy used?

Also would like blue tooth to be able to stream music from iPhone. At the moment it has Bluetooth and voice recognition which is very good but unable to stream music.

Cheers

Vin

I did wonder why it doesn't have a temperature gauge in it. Mine has done 82 K with good service history I think journeys must of been fairly long as van was rural based not in a town .

I was thinking of changing timing belt before too long. Is there anything else immediate I should be doing at this amount of miles?

Cheers Vin

You won't need to change head unit to upgrade Bluetooth to the music streaming+USB version - just the new module and have dealer change car config using ids

Is the music streaming + USB module a ford part or aftermarket ?

Vin

Real easy to fit, just unclip a cable and unscrew bolt, swap over. Difficult part is getting dealer to change the car config.

Part numbers + picture below. Though that is new, second hand part can be gotten cheaper on eBay.

Official ford part, not aftermarkrt

The DPF captures soot and muck from the engine which is then burnt off when the unit gets up to temperature, if it doesn't get up to temperature then it doesn't burn off and then gradually clogs up causing all sorts of expensive issues.

Hi David and thanks for replying. What does the EGR valve do and what does blanking it achieve ?

Cheers Vin

The EGR or exhaust gas recirculation valve basically pumps exhaust gasses back into the intake - due to the fact that diesel exhaust gasses aren't the cleanest the soot then binds with the oil which also resides usually as a fine coating from the beather pipe and clogs up the inlet manifold with gunk. This then reduces the efficiency of the engine and reduces overall power, plus just makes a mess of the inlet manifold. There are EGR valves on petrol engines but due to the fact that petrol engines have a solvent (eg petrol) in the inlet manifold and diesels don't, the inlet manifold gets clogged up.

Blanking off the EGR (usually with a £3 bit of stainless steel) will basically stop exhaust gasses getting added into the inlet manifold, it can sometimes cause the engine check light to come on, sometimes not, however its better than having exhaust gasses clogging the system up.

The EGR valve opens at variable values under acceleration taking up to 30% waste gasses in to the induction chamber for recirculation in to the combustion chamber.

Now after blanking the EGR valve there's more demand on the existing induction filter as the engine will only take in clean air via induction filter when the EGR has been blanked.

A less restricted straight swap induction filter will provide the filterd atmospheric air required while working with the blanked egr valve to reduce turbo lag and in turn increase your MPG

The EGR blanking plate and induction filter upgrade go hand in hand really,

Both will pay for themselves within a year too.

All information is in the above linked guides aswell as Q&A in after pages asked by other members,

if you get time to read its all positive reading mate any questions afterwards I'm happy to answer. 👍

Lenny, please correct if I'm mistaken, but i was under the impression that the EGRV is closed at idle & at times of acceleration i.e. when power is demanded ?

Only at nominal throttle, i.e. constant roadspeed cruising, is the EGRV open & doing it's worst to one's engine ?

I'm 99% sure it also opens under heavy acceleration such as 0-60 where the unburnt gasses are likely to be plentiful.

I agree it's closed on idle that's for sure.

and it's best blanked aswell👌

Fair enough mate :)

If the engine check light comes on can anything be done to convince it alls well at the EGR ?you have all convinced me that this is the right thing to do but I don't fancy making a modification that leaves management light on permanently

Yes, a code referring to '' insufficient EGRV flow '' , or similar, may register & if so simply delete periodically & thereby eliminate any other source

Blanking the EGRV is the kindest & probably the cheapest thing you can do to extend the life of your engine
