Loud Tapping Noise

Featured Replies

First off, hi everyone. New member as of today!

Now, i have a V reg fiesta (MK4 i think, correct me if wrong) 1.25 Zetec. Wenever i start her up theres this tapping noise. If i rev the engine it taps, if i change gear it taps, if i keep the engine at anything above 2500 - 3000 revs it taps. Its been doing it for a while now and isnt getting any worse but its not getting any better either.

Anyone got any ideas? Gonna take it to the garage on Thurs for them to have a look but if anyone knows what it is and can save me the time i would be very appreciative.

Zack

Just had a look round some other forums and seems like it could be the piston rings, what does everyone think to that??

hi it might sound daft have you checked your oil level

Yep oil level is fine, in fact all fluids have only just been topped up (in a hope that it was something to do with lack of lube) but to no avail.

Managed to get the garage to look at it today, lets see what they say. Any ideas are still apreciated though, this garage aint too great!

Make sure your engine oil is the Ford Spec. 5W30 grade, specially formulated for the early zetec engines, as they had problems involving hydraulic tappets, narrow oil-ways, and sticky valves.

The engine got withdrawn from service and redesigned, returning to service in the Mk 6 Fiesta, with bucket & shim tappets, larger oil-ways, and no special need to use the Ford-specific oil, but still 5W30.

One thing your engine cannot tolerate, is oil heavier than 5W30.

A collapsed tappet capsule creates a lot of noise, as any Vauxhall mechanic can tell you. My Rover 2.0 TD also had these capsules (as did K-series motors), and it got an engine-flush at every service, without being requested.
