Speedo Flicks / Engine Jumps

Featured Replies

My Focus has developed an intermittent fault.  When the engine has warmed up (takes longer when it's <8 degrees outside) and the car is moving (but not accelerating or slowing down), the speedo flicks to max (or at least 20mph more than actual) and the engine starts to jump like the car is going too slow for the gear.

Any ideas on a root cause?

Is it a desiel or petrol cheers chris

Sounds like the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) on the gearbox.

A common fault but can be a pain to fix as the pin that holds the sensor in can seize and it needs to be drilled out.

could also be the instrument cluster. Sadly a well known issue.

SystemOverload, Just wondering if this issues was resolved or anyone can add anything else.  My 09 Ford Focus Diesel appears to have developed a similar problem.  When doing a decent speed (50-60mph) I've felt the car jump - this can happen several times and then nothing for a few days.  Haven't noticed if the speedo drops speed but will look out for this the next time.

Can anyone explain the known issue with the instrument cluster?

It's basically the connections at the back (solder joints) start to loosen and break the connections and it becomes an intermittent connection.

The cluster is key to the cars operation and the slip in connectivity can cause it to jump and skip a beat

Hi, Sorry, thought I'd subscribed to updates, but obviously not.  It is a Petrol Engine.

I really think this is a faulty instrument cluster

The problem starting up when warm is probably a faulty crankshaft sensor or wiring
