Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI LX engine systems fault warning light on but no code

Featured Replies

Hi All

Just wondering if anyone can give me some clues as to why I have the engine systems fault warning light on, but when I plug an OBD II reader in there are no codes detected. The light is the one that illuminates red and has an exclamation mark within a round cog. It came on a few seconds after starting the car again, after it had been on a 20 minute journey down a dual carriage way. No problems with the car, drove as it should, was able to rev it throughout its range, no hesitating, stuttering, or anything else, so I'm a bit puzzled. I opened the bonnet to have a quick peek and noticed the engine cover had come loose due to the securing nut mount being perished, so I'm sure the engine cover has been flapping around a bit, not sure if this info is relevant.

Any help greatly appreciated.

It depends on what is causing the problem and the MIL indicator.

What OBD reader are you using?

Cheap generic OBD readers or software will only show certain codes from the PCM and may not show all codes that could be logged and causing the issue.

I have had very hit or miss results with generic OBD kit.

Glow plugs will put that light on.
Empty DPF fluid will also do that.
A faulty cluster can also cause this issue.
There are a lot of things that could cause it.
