I was driving on the motorway today when all of a sudden the car lost power, coughed and spluttered and then died completely, RAC said there wasnt any petrol in the tank even though the fuel guage was reading half a tank, does this sound common or rather peculiar? i am stumped as to what action i should take next, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you

P.S. its a 1999 2.0 16v petrol zetec hatchback
