12v socket not working - not (?) the fuse

Featured Replies

Hi all,

On my way home this afternoon, my 12v socket stopped working. I've checked the fuse, no visible damage, but no change with a replacement either. I'm a complete electronics novice, so before I take the car in (still in warranty but means a 60 mile round trip) what else can I try? Any advice is appreciated but please bear in mind my novice status! ;)

Thanks all.

How are you testing it? If the fuse is fine then probably a connection has come loose. I'd open up the dash to see the terminals behind the socket, hopefully one is unconnected and it's an easy fix. If you can get a multimeter with continuity testing and watch a couple of electrical fault finding vids on YT you should be able to narrow down the problem to one wire/location

Provided that you checked in the manual that it was the correct fuse (is there more than 1 12v outlet in your car?), then I really think you have done all you can under warranty. It could be the socket, or a wiring fault. But that will mean dismantling something, & that is not a good idea. The garage will use any excuse it can to evade warranty work, and diy repairs is one they will use.

Peter.
