Shock absorber problem

Morning all. Recently bought a mondeo mk3 2.0tdci. Replaced the drop links on it and was getting a rattle/clunk over bumps immediatley after. Tried to loosen the nut holding the shock absorber incase the strut bearing was too tight and with very little force the nut sheared off. I dont think there would be enough thread left to put another nut on. Has anyone had experience in taking a strut off without the holding nut? I dont even think it would be safe to drive to a mechanic. Any help would be much appreciated.
