Fuel consumption !?

Featured Replies

Hiya all :)

i have a 05 2.0tdci titanium 66k miles

ive had all 4 injectors replaced and my fuel pump suction valve sensor unit? (Something like that lol) and a new egr valve

my car says it gets 50- 65mpg on the way to work and back 50mile round trip..

Im only getting roughly 450 miles a tank?

When I accelerate I get a lot of black smoke from the exhaust and even normal slow accelerating I get smoke coming from the exhaust

any ideas why ?

any advice much appreciated

There are quite a lot of causes for smoke: Leaks in the intake system from Turbo to inlet manifold. Faulty MAP or MAF sensors, Injectors not properly coded to the pcm, EGR valve stuck open. & more. (I see egr replaced, but this is still not a 100% certain to be working.)

What was the cause to have the injectors done? Is it possible to check whether they were properly coded into the pcm?

Smoke is unburnt (or wasted) fuel, so the mpg would drop. (Unless the smoke is engine oil, then the oil level would drop.)

Intake hose leaks are one thing that is easy to check, just follow & squeeze the hoses, looking for splits etc.

Depends where the 50 miles are driven, my MK3 did about 450 to a tank if driven round town, on the motorway I would get 730 to a tank easy.

If its still smoking, as Pete says the injectors may not be coded.

Thank for the replays :) I'll check all the hoses etc

not sure why the injectors were replaced as I purchased the car with them just been done. All I know is they replaced all 4 due to the supplier messing up the order so they replaced all 4 instead of 1.

when I was driving it few days ago it didn't seem to smoke as much and it seem to have a lot more torque but now it seems to have lost the torque it had again?

Also last night when I was driving it all my lights came up on the dash - then the speedo and revs went to full and back again .. Then everything reset ? Now it says I have 0 miles in the tank and my light is on yet it was on about 110miles

That sounds like a wiring, connection or solder joint problem, either in the IC (Instrument Cluster), or in the wiring to it. Unfortunately these faults can be hard to pin down. A diagnostic system like Forscan might assist, there may be error codes from time to time that help identify the problem. Resistance and continuity measurements on the voltage supplies and CAN bus connections to the IC can be done. The old methods of tapping everything, and disturbing or cleaning all relevant connectors is sometimes the best way.

If it was a 2005 Focus, I would say it was 90% likely the IC, but I think that gremlin was particular to the Focus.

I can not think of a sensible link between this intermittent electrical fault and the smoke problem, but as the pcm & IC talk to each other all the time while running, it is possible.

PS: I would also check the battery condition and connections. This has been known to cause all sorts of odd problems.
