Blanked EGR & EML on (reset using Forscan?)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a Ford Mondeo Titanium X 2.2 TDCi (Euro 4).

I have a blanked off EGR valve with the EML now on for a second time (last time 2,000 miles ago).

Checked by mechanic last time. He opened up the valve to let it breath and the light went out once reassembled. Car drives fines.

I've got Forscan - just wondered if there is an option to clear the EML on the dashboard. If so, any idea where?

I've heard about getting a small hole put in to let the value breath, however for now I just want to get the light out.

Any advice most appreciated!

Best,

Shaun

Your light will show as a DTC,  you need to click on the DTC logo on the left, these can be cleared with the buttons at the bottom left.

Like pragmatix says, once you have cleared the DTCs, the light will go out.

If the error happens again, usually twice, then the light will come on. With less critical errors (like EGR), it usually takes two occurrences of the error to turn on the EML.

Before clearing the DTCs, note them down, or save the log file (& check it is readable). The DTCs are there to help, and can be vital in tracking down problems.

On many engines, blanking the EGR will cause errors. The air flows will not match expectations. You can:

Live with it, but read the codes & clear them often, in case something more important turns up, and is hidden.

Get the pcm re-mapped by specialists.

Un-blank the egr. Plates with holes in are not usually reckoned to be any good. If the hole is big enough to prevent DTCs, then the plate will usually have little or no effect.

Forscan is an excellent, and very powerful tool. Use it, but exercise some caution. Read the screen, and heed any warnings! Some of the service functions, in particular, can be harmful if wrongly used.

Hi all, I cleared all the DTC codes using Forscan, disconnected and started the ignition.

However, the light remains. Just wondering if I needed to do anything else? Or any other suggestions most welcome!

Thanks,

Shaun

That is a bit of a mystery.:confused1:

A couple of possibilities:

What type of adapter unit are you using. In particular, is it "modified" with the switch that provides access to the MS-CAN bus. According to fordwiki.co.uk, Mondeos from 2003 on could have this second CAN bus, though it apparently only goes to "convenience" electronics, and would not normally go to something that is requesting the MIL to be on.

Re-check for DTCs. There are a few that will not clear. The P242F DPF ash full error on the 1.6TDCI is an example, there may be similar ones on the Mondeo 2.2. Also it is possible for a DTC to re-occur straight away on 1st switch on, if the pcm detects a fault then.

If not that, then I am running out of ideas. There has to be some reason for the light, a hardware fault in the Instrument Cluster could make it come on permanently, but is very unlikely. Forscan is usually pretty good at finding all DTCs, and clearing them if allowed to. The only system likely to be more powerful is the Ford IDS system at a garage.

Maybe a few start cycles will cure it, or even the old disconnect the battery for 10 mins trick. But I would be surprised if that did it.

Thanks, the one I have was listed on eBay as a Ford F Super Diagnostic interface KA Focus Mondeo Fiesta ISO OBD OBD2 CAN.

I'll follow your advice. Part of the lighting on the instument clusters (half of rev counter) has gone out, but this has been the case for as long as I've had the car (28k miles).

Thanks again!

Ford F Super

The F-Super comes with its own software, FORmiDable, I think it may be called. I did not think it was compatible with Forscan. Forscan needs an ELM327 compatible adapter. I am sure someone else tried to use an F-Super with Forscan & failed. Have you managed to get it to work?

Forscan is an open, collaborative type of enterprise, and is constantly being added to. I think it is more powerful than any other system apart from Ford IDS, which is licensed & controlled by Ford.

Interesting note about the rev counter lighting. I do not see any direct connection to the MIL light being on, but one fault present in a unit often makes other faults more likely, due to some common cause (manufacturing or environment).

I downloaded the software called ForSCAN from www.forscan.org. It does work in so far as it connects and can read the errors. Whether deleting the codes makes any difference regarding the EML is a mystery.

However, another bulb on the dash has since gone - so now I only have the speedo and fuel gauge. So the first job will be to get the dash taken off and get the bulbs replaced.

Thanks

  • 1 month later...

I cant recall if they are SMD LED lights, and not a standard bulb, so be wary....
